Interview 2009: No hesitation
Where the spinning wheel landed yesterday, in July 2009, when Park Sihoo-ssi went on his second trip to Japan, was an interesting one. I found more gems of information and wanted to stay put at the spot today.
There was an interesting interview he did on his take on his first starring role as Lee Kangsuk in “Family Honor”. Since it is one of my all-time favorite Park Sihoo-ssi dramas, I wanted to share these bits of gems, some of which I didn’t know of. Interesting, I must say.

I have no hesitation when it comes to acting.
Actor Park Sihoo, whose “Iljimae” and “Family Honor” are being broadcast, has suddenly become a next-generation Korean Wave Hallyu star in Japan. On 4 July 2009, Chosun Online talked to Park Sihoo, who had just arrived in Japan, to hold his first Japanese fan meeting.
Q: You said that you felt an emptiness when “Family Honor” was over in the spring. Looking back, please tell us your favorite scenes and the scenes you were particular about.
PSH: There was a scene where I grabbed Dana’s arm and said “Do you know how good you are at provoking people?” I was very worried about how to express myself for that scene. I talked a lot with the Scriptwriter about it but in the end it was left to my own initiative and it turned out as it did. The Director told me that it was very good, and it was a scene I like very much.
Q: Do you have any recollection of any difficulties (during the filming)?
PSH: It was of the cold outdoor shoots. Winter outdoors are often cold and difficult, and especially the scene where I reunited after parting with Dana at the waterside. It was extremely cold and a most difficult scene, leaving me with a deep impression.
Q: In contrast, was there a scene where it was easy?
PSH: It was after the traffic accident. I was unconscious, so I just have to lie there and do nothing. (Laugh). It was a good rest.
Q: This is the second time you are in Japan since your private trip last year.
PSH: Yes. I came in last spring before shooting “Iljimae”. I wanted to relax before the filming begins.
Q: At that time, you visited Hoshinoya in Karuizawa and Izu. Did you decide to go there yourself?
PSH: I like hot springs and inns, and I wanted to stay in that kind of places. I made a reservation at Hoshinoya and searched for everything else on the Internet. After seeing the photos, I thought the red bucket bathtub in the bathroom was very interesting, so I went there. It didn’t live up to my expectations… (Laugh) I can’t remember where it was, but the scenery was beautiful and the food was delicious. I thought it was the best I have ever tasted…
Q: By the way, Park Sihoo went to Seoul when he was 20 years old to start his acting career. Was there any opposition from your family at that time?
PSH: I went to college until my second year, but I went to Seoul because I wanted to be in the entertainment industry. My parents didn’t object to it. I was already an adult then. (Laugh)
Q: You have become increasingly popular as you turn 30, but have you ever hesitated or worried about your career all this time?
PSH: I have always only thought of acting. There was at time when I had to go into the army but I never thought about giving up acting.
Q: Please tell us what you think is your selling point and your weakness.
PSH: My selling point is the brilliance of my eyes. (Laugh) I think my weaknesses is that I am shy and an introvert.
Q: Do you have any actor who is your role model?
PSH: He is Mr Sin Ku 신구님 (Nance: This is the actor who played Grandfather Ha in “Family Honor”). He has strong charisma in his softness. I want to be such an actor.
Q: What is your biggest consideration when choosing a piece of work?
PSH: Whether the character resonates with me and makes me want to take it up.
Q: Please share the plans for your next work.
PSH: I have been doing dramas that fit into my image, but I want to do a trendy drama next time. I am looking for a drama that young people will like and support. (Laugh) I am still looking for it. Nothing has been decided yet. But I want to do it later this year.”
Interviewer’s Conclusion
Park Sihoo is shy, as he admits, but he speaks and behaves gracefully and he oozes a gentle personality. And, surprisingly, you can also feel the strength of his tenacity and stubbornness. He said that he likes Lee Kangsuk the most among the roles he has played so far. He also added, “But I will not change my way of life or way of thinking according to the opinions of others (like Kangsuk did).” It was nice to see him looking straight at the future. I hope he will come across a piece of work that will interest him enough for him to say “Let’s do it!” and show his new charm.
