Park Sihoo 박시후 is the “stage name” of Park Pyungho 박평호. Born on 3 April 1978, he hails from Eunsanmyeon, Buyeo County, South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. He was educated in the school of hard knocks before going back to get his degree from the Hanyang University in theater and film.
At barely twenty, he made his way from Buyeo to Seoul. Life was hard then with him living out of a basement of a fitness centre where he worked. He had to make do sleeping in the narrow basement walkway on cardboard boxes and brave it when it flooded from rain.
Park Sihoo’s acting career began in 1997 on the theatrical stage where he appeared as an extra with tiny parts and spending his time mainly in putting up posters and handing out flyers. He debuted in the play “The Twelve Nyang Life”. He also worked as an underwear model during this time before he took on a small role in a couple of episodes in the 2005 TV series “Delightful Girl Chunhyang”
Thereafter he had supporting roles in MBC’s TV dramas “Let’s Get Married” and “Which Star Are You From?”. He had a breakthrough in 2007 with SBS drama “How to Meet a Perfect Neighbor” in a role that won him the SBS New Star Award that year. After that, he gained more recognition and was cast in the period drama “Iljimae” in a secondary role before his big break as the male lead, Lee Kangsuk, in SBS’ much loved weekend drama “Family Honor” in 2008. “Family Honor” saw his career take off.
Since then, he has been winning hearts. He was lawyer Seo Inwoo in 2010 SBS drama “Prosecutor Princess” with his “Seo Byun syndrome”. In MBC’s 2010 drama “Queen of Reversals”, his Goo Yongsik was the “man whom women wanted to attract”. The drama script was re-written and series extended just so his character would end up with the female lead. He won the MBC Excellence Award for this role.
His success continued with KBS’ Joseon period drama “The Princess’ Man”, where he portrayed a man torn between revenge and love for his enemy’s daughter. The award winning drama won him the KBS Top Excellence Award.
He broke into the Korean movie scene with “Confession of Murder” playing the role of serial killer turn best selling author. This action oriented movie which aired in 2012 was showcased around the world.
He returned to television at the end of 2012 in the social romance drama “Cheongdamdong Alice” playing Jean Thierry Cha aka Cha Seungju who had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This metaphorical drama touched many of the social issues in modern South Korea.
In 2014, he starred in the Chinese movie “Scent”, directed by award winning Hong Kong director Jessey Tsang. The movie was screened in China and Japan. He was also cast in Korean-Chinese co-produced movie “After Love” (“Love After Love”). The movie is scheduled for simultaneous release in Korea, Japan and China, dates to be confirmed.
Park Sihoo’s drama with OCN, “Local Hero” (“Neighborhood Hero”), was aired in Korea in January 2016, followed by Japan, China and Hong Kong. He played an ex-secret agent who ran a neighborhood pub. Together with a sidekick and a policeman, the trio fought for the down-trodden and keep the community save from evil and harm.
On 2 September 2017, Park Sihoo made a return to mainstream Korean drama with KBS’ “My Golden Life”. This is a 50 episode weekend family drama. Right from Day One, it has topped the weekend dramas based on AGB Nielsen Korea’s TV audience rating. On 24 September 2017, its Episode 8 crossed the 30% mark national rating.
