CELEBRATING THE 4TH ANNIVERSARY OF PARK SIHOO-SSI’S “CONFESSION OF MURDER”!
庆祝施厚君的“我是杀人犯”第4周年!
I wrote an earlier article “Full blown bromance“ about duo Park Sihoo-ssi’s Goo Yongsik character and his side kick in “Queen of Reversals”. Their relationship was part of the storyline of the drama and between them they did a superb job!
In his first movie “Confession of Murder”, Park Sihoo-ssi’s relationship with his co-star, Jung Jaeyoung-ssi, was an adversarial one – between a detective who was out to trap a mass murderer. Despite being foes, I personally thought there was so much chemistry between the duo. They made movie magic taking opposing sides.
On-screen and off-screen, I felt the two of them rocked together. Going by the media interviews and how they interacted during the press conferences and live interviews, they appeared to get along so well with each other. Even though they have different personalities, they are like brothers or close friends. Easy going, communicating well and having fun together. One a seasoned movie actor who has many successful movies under his belt and the other, a rookie with his first time movie. One who dresses well and is a fashion icon, while the other loves his comfort and dresses down, sometimes to being downright sloppy, very un-starlike.
I remember reading about their first meeting. Park Sihoo-ssi was dressed to suit the occasion, 선배 or senior Jung Jaeyoung-ssi came extra casual and wore a pair of slippers! That threw Park Sihoo-ssi off guard, leaving him a little disconcerted! Kekeke! During another interview, Jung Jaeyoung-ssi teased Park Sihoo-ssi about being very good looking and popular among the ladies, especially in Japan and that he needed to learn from him on how to put on the charm to attract the ladies 🙂
Jung Jaeyoung-ssi is of a serious countenance, poker faced with a dry sense of humour. Being the rookie, Park Sihoo-ssi regularly sought advice from his 선배 or senior. Gullible him got tricked on occasions, including the fact that actors performed all their action scenes, no using doubles. And so, we saw Park Sihoo-ssi in some major actions for “Confession of Murder”. Perching precariously on a moving car during a car chase scene and having to battle with poisonous snakes in a swimming pool! Poor chap, he got conned! Doubles were usually used for tough actions scenes! Hahaha!
The duo performed a duet during the press conferences to promote the movie. Their closeness and camaraderie were evident – the older and younger brothers, sibling rivalry and yet constantly ribbing each other in good humour.
I love the off-screen chemistry of this duo, this 남남가플 or man-man couple! 🙂 They made me laughed so hard! I really hope they will have more opportunities to work together again. This duo rocks!
So on this note, I end our 4th anniversary celebration for Park Sihoo-ssi’s first ever movie “Confession of Murder”! Hope you enjoyed re-living some of the highlighted moments!

“The dynamic duo” of the two protagonists, the chemistry between PSH and Jung Jaeyoung , in the movie “Confession of Murder” is due to their excellent acting technique, also their genuine connection, also their talent. The chemistry between these two good actors was essential for the success of the film. Each of their objectives was to get the other actor prove that he was the one for him and up for the challenge. And during the shootings this was perfectly proved, because each of them knew exactly how to use his talent, each of them enjoyed matching wits with his partner, and so the acting was dynamic. And due to their talent , the two actors have realized that the most important thing in their movie was the energy, the chemistry that actually happened in front of the camera. And they also tried to find the overlap between the character and themselves , and live the character’s problems as much as possible. And so the moments went beyond they expected, or could have planned, the success came out of the heat of their playing, being alive on the big screen. “When it comes to chemistry with actors, I always feel chemistry is not something that comes and goes. You either have it or you don’t.”[Jonathan Jackson]. An fortunately the chemistry between PSH and JJY and their great acting went hand-in-hand, creating a movie to be praised 4 years ago and up today.
The director of the movie is a stunt man himself, as I read, hence his demand on stints and actions is so high. As I have just read the 5 parts of The Dark Knight interview from the link Wilma has shared in Nance’s article couple of days ago, in that interview, we get to read how much hard work PSH taken in filming the swimming pool (whole day til dawn and hot water pipes faulty, water is so cold that in 5 minutes body can get paralysed), the car chasing real actions with fast moving cars….even that scene where PSH’s face copped the noodles full of slippery sauce, as PSH described, the director likes the camera to be able to capture the scene right in his face. Full applause to the 3 great men who executed to beyond exellence , the direcotr, the 2 male actors. Most of all is the conception of the script, as Stefania said before, in any good movie, the 3 things we need are the script, the script and the script. I marvelled at the director’s genius thinking totally outside the square to come up with such a precise script, blended in with his stunt ability, so cleverly carved out COM. I am off track here as this article is about the chemistry of the 2 male actors, but as Nance and Stefania have both said it so well there is nothing left for me to add about how marvellous our PSH and Jung Jae Young (I just copied Jung Jae Young and pasted…..I actually still don’t know his name)
Chai Hua , you are right too ! Praising only the stunt scenes , PSH has performed by himself, and I think it’s enough to say that PSH has surpassed himself..”.. stunts requires an enormous amount of mental toughness.”[dr. Brian Hite ] But, as dr. Brian Hite has found in his psychological studies, the Positive Psychological Capital is a strong predictor . That means , as in PSH’s case , that performers with high PsyCap has 4 psychological constructs : self-efficiency[confidence], hope, optimism, and resilience. And PSH, the actor, doing also stunt performence , has striven for his satisfaction of the best quality of his acting.
I like the professional affinity created between the two, and that contributed greatly to the film’s success. And also about the friendship between Park Si Hoo and his senior Jung Jae Young, I like more. Both have a strong sense of humor and the dialogue between them delights me.
On August 22, 2014 Park Si Hoo accepted from his good Chinese friend An Hu (partner in the movie ”Scent”) the Ice Bucket Challenge (a charity event, an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice and water on someone’s head to promote awareness of the disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS), and he challenged his senior actor Jung Jae Young, composer Kim Hyung Suk, and [Hong Kong actor] Tony Leung. On August 23, 2014 Jung Jae Young takes up ice bucket challenge and thanked Park Si Hoo for nominating him.
Thank you for sharing this. I remember this bucket challenge and actually wrote something on it earlier but I forgot about it this time round 🙂 Yes, I believe the duo are great buddies and I like Jung Jaeyoung-ssi for being such a sport! I really hope they can work together again!
Thank you Daniela for sharing the ice bucket challenge with such precise details. I saw PSH’s ice bucket video, but forgotten who PSH invited to take up the challenge except Tony Leung, coz I don’t remember the names of all Korean actors including Jung Jae Young’s. Korean is a foreign language to me very hard to remember their names, whereas Tony Leung is my mother tongue so it’s far easier to remember HK actors’ names.
Korean language is difficult to learn for me too (I’m from Eastern Europe), but due to the extraordinary work of the wonderful ladies who created the blog PSH4U, I managed to find this detailed information.
I have followed Nance’s 4 articles on COM this week with keen interest but only found some time today to comment. I have to make an admission. Unlike a number amongst the sisterhood here, I am not really a fan of murder movies or stories. Yes, I have watched stage plays like the MouseTrap as well as movies like Dial M for Murder and Murder on the Oriental Express ( Agatha Christie / Alfred Hitchcock ?) but bloody grizzly murder scenes are not top on my priority of interesting watch. And to read murder suspense? Oh never! Give me history and autobiography anytime. So when I started following PSH ( early this year thus I am indeed a very newbie fan of his! ) and didn’t know he acted in movies as well, I was quick to put back on the shelf in the DVD shop what the salesman had enthusiastically promoted. ‘Miss, this is highly recommended Korean Thriller. It’s a must watch’ he has said. But as it was entitled ‘I am the Murderer’ and he didn’t say out it starred PSH, I didn’t give it a second look and went on to pick up a DVD on CDDA instead. When I finally realized he was the lead star in the highly rated COM I went back to the same shop but made sure what I bought was original, not the pirated version with a different title. Watched it with an open mind ( remember I don’t like murder movies! ) but at the end of it I came to the verdict it is excellent in so many ways. Plot is rich and thick in intrigues with such a surprising but intelligent twist in the ending, the pace is fast and pulsating never a dull
a dull moment could be detected, the many dangerous moments encountered by LEE Du Seok which I now know were all performed by PSH himself without the help of stuntmen-all these do add up to make it a terrific movie to watch. My 2 thumbs up! PSH does show case his acting is par excellence- I hated his sneer; how can one with such good looks transforms himself into a character we reel
with despise? Only an excellent actor can. And with that it is very clear he can take on any role and deliver it convincingly! Imagine, he fears snakes but for the sake of art and professionalism – he plunged into the swimming pool to be willingly chased by those which he fears! PSH my greatest admiration to you! You’ve got substance!
Dorothy, excellent, excellent.! As you say ,I’m not a fan of murder movies either. But with PSH playing in a thriller is something new, something that has made us realize that, when a talented actor like him plays even in a crime movie, we can surpass the fear, the repulse for such movies, because our attention is focused only on the main hero. on PSH’s wonderful acting. Yes, he has something worthy of appreciation, meaning his acting , his creativity. He has a substance in his life, he is proud of. With “C of M” he has achieved something great , something of value , that makes him happy.
Dorothy, no doubt I put my hands straight up declaring “”I LIKE MURDERS”” but I take it all of you understood what I meant. As Wilma has clarified and I borrowed her words it’s the analytical and intrigue related to murder mysteries of the 5 Ws, what, where, when, who, why that’s the reason I like murders. Certainly not because of the brutality and the gruesome sights of dead bodies or inhumane acts that I am attracted to. Nonetheless I need to clarify my TOP 1 LIKE of all is COMEDY. Humour is my top 1 choice of interest. People who often asked me why I married my husband, my answer is simple,”” he makes me laugh””. I said that in early years of my marriage, I said the same thing just recently, a natural reflection from my mind and heart. Humour is top 1 attraction for me. In all the job advertisments of my type of mundane dull accounting job that I went for, there was only once the ad said the candidate must possess humour. And true enough the only nice thing I remember from that job is the exchange of numerous humour with my boss who placed that ad. Dry humour too. I remember I had said my wish on Nance’s this blog in my early days of joining, that among all the roles PSH will endeavour to take on, it will be his comedian role that will most excite and intrigue me. I just saw an interview on HK tv about new blood of directors sharing their views. One point I noted is that a good comedian, an effective comedian possess incredible intelligence and also very stringent standard of his demands on how to execute things, one director declared it’s really the toughest task to work with one renowned and successful comedian who has proven track records of his comedy works, reason being his demand on standard of execution is so high that the director finds it rather breathless to follow through, yet the director admitted that he realised that the secret to a comedy success is the incredible high standard of execution. Make no mistake about anything to its milli second. Otherwise the punch effect won’t work.
Chai Hua Loke In my heart PSH given a good comedy will turn out to be an excellent comedian. Our man has already demonstrated his ability to make us laugh with glee whenever he makes a funny gesture or utter a cute remark or breaks into a comical dance or simply by blinking those famous eyes of his. Coupled with his thoroughness in mastering whatever new tasks given him I have no doubt he will turn out a winner! But right now he is yearning to do a Daniel Hector!?
Ok, I better go googled what Daniel Hector is before I comment, kekeke…This the fun of what Nance has said meanwhile while the world debate on this week’s America’s politics, we sisters enjoy ourselves in our book club chat….one mention, one idea, leads to more chat, ok here I go …..now what and who is Daniel Hector? Just like when you said Jay Chou but sorry I have never heard of him despite the million fans he has. Even when you sent me a link of Jay Chou, it didn’t stir one string coz I have never heard of him nor seen his face before
Gosh, my google world can’t even return any results of Daniel Hector…..Google instead gave me Daniel Hechter who is an aged 70 French fashion designer…..so what’s with Daniel Hector that PSH is yearning to do next? Oh blindme…..I must be a frog inside my well.
Back to the subject of comedy. Totally agree with you Dorothy Ooi all that you have said makes PSH a good comedian. To me humour is like what Stefania Lupu has said before, similar to chemistry, you either have it or you don’t. It doesn’t come and go. PSH certainly is a humourous person, he is full of tricks himself though he maybe shy and short in words. He always comes across to me as the one who has the last laugh in many things. An example when he hides inside the figurine and looks at his fans hidden inside and can have his last laughs.
As usual I often digress far and away from your comment 🙂 I am glad you enjoyed COM, glad you didn’t miss such a great movie. Again PSH opens new doors to our life experiences. If not because of him, you probably would not watch COM because it’s a murder thriller.
The chemistry between PSH and JJY is undeniable. They are pairing so well both on- and off-screen. Their interviews were fun to watch and read. It has always been my wish they will be co-leaders again. This time not opposing each other, but running a private company together. Maybe as detectives again, because no one can beat them tas a duo! 🙂
