CELEBRATING THE 6TH ANNIVERSARY OF PARK SIHOO-SSI’S “QUEEN OF REVERSALS”!
庆祝施厚君的“逆转女王”第6周年!
I was looking at how to define “bromance” and thought Wikipedia did a great job of it. It defined bromance as “a close, emotionally intense, non-sexual bond between two men….It is an exceptionally tight affectional, homosocial male bonding relationship exceeding that of usual friendship and is distinguished by a particularly high level of emotional intimacy.”
This exactly described the relationship Park Sihoo-ssi’s Goo Yongsik had with his secretary Kang Woo. They have a full blown bromance going! A Goo-Kang bromance! Kang Woo was more than just secretary, he was driver, side kick, office tyrant, busy body, bodyguard, friend, confidante, younger brother, voice of reason, shoulder to cry on…you name it. In simple terms, he was always there for Goo Yongsik through thick and thin.
Their bromance could be so hilarious at times, serious at times and pulling at your emotional heartstrings at times. Like brothers, they were so in tuned with each other, knowing how the other felt, acting alike and in unison and taking care and watching out for each other. I qualify that…despite being younger, Kang Woo was mainly the care giver to the rather childish, often juvenile and spoilt Goo Yongsik!
Being the “boss”, Goo Yongsik had the habit of ordering Kang Woo around, in an exaggerated authoritative manner, which often came out like that of a recalcitrant child! Poor Kang Woo had to take whatever Goo Yongsik matted out. But, he was no “yes man” and would not take orders hands down, particularly any “misbehavior” of his boss. His often straight-faced retorts upset Goo Yongsik who would threaten to fire him! But as Kang Woo knew best, he just treated these threats like the buzzing of an annoying mosquito!
While Goo Yongsik behaved like a tyrant and spoilt brat, under all his prickly behavior, he valued the opinion, support and friendship of Kang Woo. Noticed every time Kang Woo ignored him or walked away in a huff, he would be a little disconcerted, feel unsure of himself and would chase after Kang Woo for reassurance?
Many a times their boss-slave behavior (now, who was boss and who slave?) made me burst out laughing, tickled pink by their funny behavior and expressions! But you know that underneath all these, there was charming camaraderie, brotherly love and strong, unshakable friendship between them. And that was exactly what their bromance was all about!
I just love this exaggerated full blown bromance in Park Sihoo-ssi’s “Queen of Reversals”. It was what made the drama come so much alive with humor!

Today’s topic, “bosom friend” rare! Drama, the intersection of the two boys, interesting, left a deep impression! With Yong sik, often runaway state; the appearance of small heroform, be neither humble nor pushy in each other; life journey, invisible companion, although there is no fixed pattern, but still feel the warmth! Only really love each other, can accommodate shortcomings, as the shadow follows the form to pay! Real, with the most simple rhythm, put you in the heart!
When a drama is fully immersive ,
When a drama is fully immersive, fascinating , interactive, leaving messages, the people are going to remember it. This happens to “Queen of Reversals” that is still remembered, is still popular, is still watched with pleasure, even after 6 years. Because “Queen of Reversals” is a drama that offers positive interactive stories. because it makes us love the characters, who are captivating our emotions. And our emotions are captivated also by the “bromance”, as Nance entitles her article today, the emotional relationship between Goo Yongsik and his secretary- friend, Kang Woo. And throughout the drama these two guys friends are making us enjoy and admire how they are hanging out together, how they are helping one anotheer, how they are teasing one another, how they are embracing the joys of their male bonding, how they are carring for one another. As Kang Woo tries to help Goo Yongsik to improve his relations with his employees: ” Didin’t I tell you? Do not give them the full blow. Try not to let them be awkward . Be mild and diverse. People’s feeling gets affected by the content that you speak. Although you wanted them to unite and perform well, this could bring down the team’s morale.” The good humor in the “bromance” between Goo Yongsik and Kang Woo is like a tonic for our mind. It attracts us, it enjoys us, it’s the best antidote for anxiety. “Humor is mankind’s greatest blessing.”[Mark Twain] Yes, the humor revealed in this “bromance” is the greatest blessing for the viewers. But not forgetting the excellent interpretation of PSH in his best quality humorous style.
This duo is one of the key pillars of QoR. It’s always funny how they interact with each other. They are more like brothers than boss/employee. That scene when Kang Woo told his boss he had been unfair to Hwang Tae Hee, because she didn’t cheat on her marriage and he deserved to be slapped in the face, is one of the multiple scenes that impressed on me. Which boss would accept this from a mere employee?
I could not decide if it is this bromance thing or the love story of GYS and the heroine that actually nailed QOR as my top number 1 like of all PSH’s works. I almost think is the presence of this bromance that made QOR dented a far deeper impression onto my viewing. To add to what Wilma has cited about impressive scenes of these 2 blokes, I like so many (in fact I like all of the 2 brothers scenes and conversations.) Kang Woo’s purportedly great idea of having a dinner with the staff before the execution of redundancy, its ulterior motive was seen through by Hwang Tai See and led the drunked her to lecture GYS about alpha and beta types of people, GYS never expected this, the subsequent car scene where GYS was so annoyed by her lecture yet Kang Woo was standing on Tai See’s side and stabbed one more knife into GYS that “” ÿes, you are alpha man, make no mistake about that.””. Any usual secretary/PA would have felt so bad that his scheme backfired, but Kang Woo too is one with a character of “”devil may care””. I laughed the loudest when Kang Woo’s borrowed GYS’s line and tried to apply on the girl he tried to woo “” now that you and I are no longer colleague, I can do whatever I wish.”” and got backfired. The sequence of scenes leading on Kang Woo to think his boss is in love with the same girl he himself likes til Kang Woo discovered the reality, Kang Woo’s stern warning to GYS why Tai See’s is a taboo for GYS when love is concerned, yet finally when GYS decided to call it quit and leave Korea Kang Woo is trying to use Tai See as his last resort to bait GYS to stay, these twists and turns every of its conversations all bear meaningful acceptable truth as the story develops things said earlier no longer applicable. All these are so original lines so clever plots all coming from the heart. I also love the way Kang Woo micmicking Tai See’s curling hair to one side of her ear. The scene where GYS open the door of his own apartment to find Kang Woo but not Tai See, Kang Woo gave him no face point blank said “”disappointed it’s me, not Tai See?”” then he just charged in to the apartment, GYS lost himself even robotically walked out again to close the door when Kang Woo ordered him to close the door. I can go on and on just about these 2.
You’re right Chai Hua Loke. Mine was only one example. You gave a lot more. QoR would not have been the same without the interactions of this bromance couple!
Wilma van Zwietering Wilma as you know there are so many more…:) 🙂 🙂 The invitation to GYS’s house to cook for staff, Kang Woo cried on GYS’s shoulder in the mass transit subway, both of them each trying to give advise as to what women would like and how to woo the ladies, that deadly stinging stare the next morning when Kang Woo found out whose car that was the one he had to change punctured tyre in the middle of the night…….
I like to add on bromance topic that in our lives, I believe everyone would agree the fun when you fall in love, is not only coming from the one you fall in love with. Often the equal share of warmth, joy and that immense dosages of overwhelming feeling come from your private sharing with your confidante. The analysis, the guessing, the process of falling in love, sometimes very sure, sometimes not so sure and so on. Kang Woo and GYS have several of their such moments of sharing, though GYS is one who dare not risk too much by pouring his whole heart to Kang Woo because he knew nothing good can be said by Kang Woo, but he observed and watched every reaction of Kang Woo towards the notion of his love for Tai See.
