If I tell you that Oppa Park Sihoo-ssi unveiled this secret place, I will be lying through my teeth. I have no idea if he even knew this restaurant existed or if he had ever been there!
Secret Garden is a place Liliane and I discovered while we were in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, following the “footsteps” of Park Sihoo-ssi. A rooftop restaurant on the 4th floor of an old, dingy residential apartment, one would never think that a gem like this can be found in this place. A best kept secret or is it? We want to share so maybe when you or our Oppa goes to Ho Chi Minh, you might want to eat at this secret place.
It is just across the road from Saigon Grill, the restaurant with the wheel! Look for a side lane with old residential buildings across the road from Saigon Grill. Venture into the lane and you will chance on the restaurant sign overhead, above the drying clothes and among all the mangled electricity wires!
And when you find it, you have to make your way up the dark and dingy staircase to 4th floor, passing by a communal wash area and tap located on the ground floor used by the residents for washing their dirty dishes and laundry and whatever that needed to be washed!
As you climb the dingy stairs with graffiti covered walls and doors and peer at corridors leading to people’s homes, your thought might be, am I in the right place? How can there be a restaurant here?
It will be a real relief to finally make it to the top and even more reassuring to be greeted by the crowing welcome from the resident rooster! Yes, one does live in this Secret Garden, in his wired cage in the middle of this ornately decorated Vietnamese garden restaurant overlooking more rather dilapidated old apartments!
The menu offered a great selection of Vietnamese dishes. As I no connoisseur of Vietnamese cuisine, I believe a refresh of the traditional style to tease more the modern palette.
We ordered three dishes which we thought will be just nice for two without being gluttonous. We started with drinks, of the non-alcoholic kind, with a touch of Vietnam! Different concoctions using fragrant limes, lemongrass, mint and lotus!
And we ordered dishes with local produce. Wingbeans and beef stir fry. Fried Vietnamese spring rolls. Sesame prawns with sweet basil and mint. All served with tangy, spicy chilli and lime sauce! Yummy all! Though the spring rolls could have been much better with rice paper wrappers than the flour ones!
Overall, this secret place lives up to its name… Secret Garden. A secret hideout that serves tempting Vietnamese cuisine cooked with fresh seasonal produce in an ornate garden setting and boasting a real live rooster to rule the roost!
So the secret’s unveiled! Try the Secret Garden the next time you hit this city. You won’t regret!

Indeed, it’s a good restaurant, with many apetisant dishes and pleasant presentation. They have even that French delicacy Escargot. But that entrance … it’s not inviting. What I’m supposed to think is only for a limited number of connoisseurs and also for courageous and curious ones like you, Nance and Liliane. I remembered I had a similar experience and surprise with a restaturant, years ago, in Bucharest. Also, in Secret Garden I saw (on Google, ofcourse) many non-Asian faces.
