The temperatures in the city I live in plunged recently, despite it being already spring. Last Saturday night was so cold, I was thinking or should I say dreaming of a nice warm yummy hotpot! And then suddenly in the wee hours of the morning my phone went “ding”!
Guess what? It was our night owl, Park Sihoo-ssi coming online at around 2am! And he posted on Weibo…exactly what I have been craving for! He said “I ❤️ hotpot”! He and his buddy were waiting for their hotpot in an empty restaurant…late night or early morning supper maybe?
He made me hungry!
Talking about hotpot, I have tried many. That from home, Singapore. Yes, we do have hotpots despite the hot weather, and yes, you will feel like a leaking aircon afterwards with all that perspiration! But Singapore style with its seafood, meat and vegetables cooked in a clear soup base is my favorite! Add just a touch of simple dipping sauce of soya sauce and cut chili, if you like to spice things up. And in the end, you chow down the delicious goodness of the soup! Yums!
While living in China, I came across one of their versions of hotpot. Mainly of meats and innards and extra, extra spicy especially the Chongqing style with it Szechuan pepper and a pot full of oil. My, it is mind boggling and literally numbing of your senses! Good for wintery freezing days!
Then there is the Hong Kong style with a mix of everything from seafood, to meat to meat balls, veggies, tofu curds…you name it. And the dipping sauce is the best! Make your own from the selection of condiments from soya sauce, sesame sauce, peanut sauce, garlic, parsley, chilli oil, red cut chilli…self serve! Sometimes I wonder for some if they were enjoying more the hotpot or partaking of their self concocted sauce! 🙂
Ah…I heard through the grapevine that the hotpot restaurant Park Sihoo-ssi went to is called 海底豆捞 and that he went to their newly opened branch in Gangnam. This restaurant should bring him fond memories of his time spent in China. He was “kissed” unexpectedly by a flying noodle in this same restaurant when he was there! Remember this, Park Sihoo-ssi? 🙂
Thinking about this is making me so hungry…maybe I should go for hotpot later this evening! A good idea!

Mi pollo
Oh so it was last Saturday night 2 am he posted this hotpot video. I actually haven’t checked out Weibo for yonks and haven’t even followed closely this video that other fans posted. Thanks Nance for this update which filled up my gap of PSH’s news. Oh Yes, I vividly remember that video of him where flying noodle kissed his face, so cute…..I was thinking whether the noodle maker planned it or was it a pure accident, why so spot on his face?? Hotpots as you have described is a big part of the many Asians’ lifestyle. I remember someone once said because she doesn’t know how to cook, whenever she invites friends home she would host hotpot coz it’s easiest and won’t go wrong. So once I had friends over for a Chinese meal I thought I should prescribe this theory instead of the many cooking of several Chinese dishes. Alamak (!!) when I am in the land where no hotpot pre prepared food sold readily where every ingredient that are suitable for hotpot became my 2 pairs of hands to scale, and cut into the correct and good looking portions, that feast turned out to be much more work for me alone to come up with sufficient galore of similar to HK type of hot pot, ie meat, tofu, vege, etc etc. Hence I had not hosted a 2nd hotpot since. Just the scaling and cutting of fish alone is something I rather not do again. And not just one type of fish….gees. Well, PSH certainly knows his food well, he knows how to warm his stomach in a cold winter night, yes, hotpot is the go.
Such a huge, rich, tasteful hotpot in the middle of the night is quite unusual for my diet. Yes, I;d like to eat such a hotpot, especially on a cold day, but not at 2 am in the night? Studies show that when food is consumed late at night, after dinner during the sleep cycle, the body is more likely to store those calories , as fat, and gain weight, rather than bum it as energy. Maybe PSH worked till late in the night to like eating such a “pantangruelic” dish. Though looking tasteful, such a hotpot is too huge, even during daytime, while in the middle of the night is absolutely quite a challenge for one’s stomach. Or maybe PSH swallowed only a hotpot soup, which is good for stomach. One thing I don’t understand looking at the display of such tasteful hotpot Hong Kong style, or Chinese style. How these people eating all these remain slim ,like PSH too? Enjoy the hotpot dish, for those who like to eat it, while I’ll enjoy looking at it.!
He probably only posted at 2 am but ate at 9pm. All sorts of possibilities .
I believe it was late night or early morning actually – look at the empty restaurant…it can’t be empty it if were earlier…
That’s the only thing i thought it could be rather late. But how many restaurants still open at 2am just for 2 customers. .
Restaurant open 24 hours 🙂
Stefania – Asians as a whole love to eat late at night. They call it supper and where I live, many young or old will flock to stalls and shops late at night, say after movies or clubbing, to have a binge eating our very famous dark soya sauced fried noodles ( Chinese dish ) or bread with curry ( Indian dish) or rice cooked with coconut decorated with tasty meat, eggs, anchovies, cucumbers and spicy paste ( Malay dish). Afraid it’s very sinful unhealthy eating and I have long given up this habit!
Perhaps eating late and with the place empty is a necessity rather than a choice – he may not be able to eat in peace when crowded and with too many staring eyes.
Dorothy Ooi Yes, Dorothy, I remember those youth days after disco dancing til wee hours, a group of us will go eat all the food you described at say 4am….kekeke. Yes Stefania, Asians in buzz cities there’s no end of a day, you can find interesting things to do for 24 hours, which as Nance said open 24 hours hotpot for PSH and his mate.
Dorothy Ooi Correct! the price to pay as a celebrity.
Talking about eating, husband was saying to Bob the dog before he died, what are we gonna do with our lives after Bob…..and husband said perhaps mum will put more efforts into cooking good food for ourselves. For last 10 months my interest to cook had dwindled to minimum as my daily focus had been how to get Bob interested to eat his food…..you will laugh when you hear this next, we were eating Bob’s food the immediate days after he died. Those food were freshly cooked for Bob, meaning we didn’t plan the time to put the dog down, he went when it’s time and he told us with signs. Meanwhile I was still cooking up food for him. The sweet potatoes mashed with good quality butter and cream, the good quality rice cooked with sausages and eggs and asparagus….coz the dog stopped eating those cheap quality rice that taste like sand way back in August….such is my food chapter of late. Certainly lacking hotpot variety, so this hotpot topic is great to bring in various dimensions of food to fill my mind….:)
Dorothy, I think this weekend I will cook nasi lemak (rice cooked with coconut decorated with tasty meat, eggs, anchovies, cucumbers and spicy paste ( Malay dish)…..haven’t had this for some years…..
Do show off the result of your weekend cooking. If Stefania and others are not familiar with Nasi Lemak they will be delighted to know. Recently voted by some international bodies as a healthy food for breakfast! I love Nasi Lemak
Now you are making me hungry too! I have not had nasi lemak for years!
Dorothy Ooi Thanks Dorothy for explaining me about the Asian habit to have super late by night. It’s different from ours.
Chai Hua, I like rice, and I eat only Asian rice, and the dish you mention of rice decorated with tasty meat , eggs, anchovies, cucumbers, but for me without spicy, seems very tasteful. I’d look for the recipe to prepare for myself.
Dorothy and Chai Hua I’m always looking for good healthy food, necessary for my diet, so I’ll look for Nasi Lemark. Thanks.
Stefania Lupu I have bought ingredients to cook Nasi Lemak, just hope I get back to my knack for cooking….very rusty and ineffective nowadays. I will keep you posted how I go with it. In any case, my version is very tone down to suit our palate, the Asian version is very spicy.
Hotpot! Our PsH is really a good ambassador for his country, often taking the trouble to introduce great Korean food and delicacies to his non Korean international fans.
I had my first taste of Korean hotpot less than 2 months ago. Treated to lunch by a client and I really loved the hot steaming chicken based soup; spooned it up to the last drop. That Korean version was certainly served different from our local hotpot (which is broadly similar to Singapore’s steamboat) in that for our local version we can opt for more than one version of the soup – half plain and half spicy tongyam or chilli padi hot. Nevertheless it was tasty good.
My client informed that her entrepreneur husband discovered Korean hotpot when he visited Korea for the 1st time, loved it so much, he was seriously considering opening a Korean hotpot joint back here. She had a hard time talking him out of it — who in the right mind would keep eating hotpot in a hot hot tropical country like ours, that was how she reasoned it out with him. I must say I couldn’t quite follow her logic though since steamboat is so popular in my country, eaten everywhere lunch, dinner or supper.
Sharing in the evening, a little hungry! Hot pot, the first choice in winter. Because of eating, can be multiple choice! He is a typical delicacy in front of chowhound, no willpower at all, so I prefer this topic! Eat, not only is a kind of national culture, but also a personal self-cultivation. The table to take care of everyone’s feelings, try to do a comprehensive friend, that state must be kind and trustworthy! The real world, meet different people, and they eat together, in different speech and deportment, intuitive parenting! Food, inadvertently, bring us the most direct taste and the most relaxed moment! Love to share, Shi Shi’s food photos, simple and warm, very homely feeling!
