CELEBRATING THE 6TH ANNIVERSARY OF PARK SIHOO-SSI’S “QUEEN OF REVERSALS”!
庆祝施厚君的“逆转女王”第6周年!
For all his flippancy, Park Sihoo-ssi’s Goo Yongsik had a heart of gold. It could be that this heart of gold was latent, the human side lying low, waiting to be awakened and to be discovered.
Poor little rich boy Goo Yongsik was wallowing in self-pity when his father grounded him in Korea, literally not allowing him access to his private jet and credit cards. So can’t go anywhere, no money to do anything. The only thing he could do and he was determined to fail was to take charge of a group of company misfits and failures.
The “Beta” people, the have nots, as “Black Rose” Huang Taeshi coined when she accepted Goo Yongsik’s soju drink challenge on behalf of her husband. Those who were not born with silver spoons in their mouths but had to struggle every step of their way through life.
Well, the “Beta” folks just might have awakened and brought to the fore his heart of gold.
The “Beta” folks’ real plights of life and death, sickness and health, struggles and despair, love and be loved. When he had to make a success of these down-troddens, Goo Yongsik was compelled to see, feel and share their every heartache, pain and struggle. His initial horror and abhorrence gave way to understanding and empathy and finally fighting for their existence and rights.
A transformation that bore witness to the breaking down of barriers and making Goo Yongsik turn more human and making him a much better person. From a self-centered, lonely spoilt brat who knew not what to do with his life, he matured and bloomed to become a go getter with a driving ambition to make life a success and with closely knitted friendships.
The ultimate saw his heart of gold shining through when he personally paid for the wife and children of ailing GM Mok Youngchul to travel from the US to be with him during his last hours. That scene of family reunion was what touched me most, bringing to light a new and better Goo Yongsik! What a heart wrenching scene!
So on this note, I conclude our celebration of “Queen of Reversals” 6th Anniversary. I hope you enjoyed our goo-goo sharing and coming together going goo-goo ga-ga over our favorite man!

“Queen of Reversals” is unveiling its treasure so very much appreciated by its viewers . This is Goo Yongsik, the man with a heart of gold, the boss with an amazing soul, who shares a piece of himself to his employees, which makes them decide to stay by himself, because they believe in himself. And this is what one of them reveals about his director Goo Yongsik, at the shareholders meeting , where the new subsidiary president is to be elected. :” I may not know if Dir. Goo Yongsik has leadership skills or not, but what I do know is that. If I have a job , as important as my life, really as important as my life, then this person will be my pick for it.” Goo Yongsik is a gold hearted man and is unique among other bosses, accepting one of his employee to live together with him ,in his apartment, because this one can’t afford the rent of a house. How many bosses would accept such an idea? “Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; the third is to be kind.”[Henry James] And Goo Yongsik , with a heart of gold, is three times kind. And PSH is three times magnificent interpreting the character of the gold hearted Goo Yongsik! Praising the 6th anniversary of “Queens of Reversals” represents also an invitation to watch or rewatch this excellent drama, where PSH surpasses himself with his talent!
Stefania how wise it is to know the 3 important things in life which is to be kind, as simple as that. Kindness always touch us deeply, from a small gesture of kindness to the kind of kindness as GYS has done for the dying staff especially, these are the things one remembers forever, we maynot remember many things as time lapses, but kindness stay deeply in our hearts in our minds.
GYS sure has a heart of gold that was activated when he became the team leader of the downgraders. His life took another direction in which he discovered what really mattered to him personnally. The camadarie was so strong. It was only natural GYS started his own business with his team members.
GYS who at the introduction early episodes in QOR as we all said before, as in Nance’s earlier articles this week, is a playboy who hides his inflated ego with cheekiness. In the beginning we saw how he was self involved (praising himself of his abs and sense of style after he rolled off the bed next to a woman), having his fun and chance to ”revenge” on Tai See’s husband who bullied GYS in the army camp etc, while all these scenes about him were shown to show viewers this lonely chaebol attributes of a typical useless rich spoilt brat who is good at nothing, the one scene that really stunt me there and then was when he innocently pointed out the most obvious fact yet no one at that large corporate management meeting (his 1st attendance), no one discussed why and how their company has deteriorated til the point of x number of staff needed to be made redundant. As the scene show everyone at meeting with high speed fingers on their labtop keyboards, went fast and furious into the catchment group of employees to be laid off, GYS just said “”excuse me….why is that no one said anything about how we come to be like this (the need to layoff), isn’t this very obvious that the managers and departmental heads poor management that we come to this stage?? Shouldn’t the managers and heads of departments who need to take some responsibilities (instead of bypassing that obvious fact and go straight into selection who to lay off)…”” This is the very 1st sign that GYS has all the latent gold inside his heart ,that he is a fair man, a sharp person who despite never ever worked before, could straight away point out the basic common sense. When everyone hides the obvious to protect their own ass GYS reminded these senior management of this one basic common sense. Pass the blame and let the lower rank staff suffer is the usual ugly human behaviour nowadays. But GYS wouldn’t sit through that in total silence, where he could very well be as he twirled his pen and blew his fringe to kill his boredom and oblivion at that 1st meeting
I really like the script with respect of the handling of the redundancy process. GYS is put on the spot to do that project of restructuring as an exchange of those frozen finance and private jets use. He cleverly (well he thought he was clever then) negotiated with his father as soon as he completed that project, those freeze will be lifted and he is free to fly out Korea to resume his overseas’ lifestyle (his comfort zone). So he thought well I shall just go in, kill them off as quick as I can then I am a free man again. Alas, the human world involves human hearts and souls, no matter how reluctant he is, the latent kindness (as Buddha says deep inside every human heart, there is this spot of kindness, which can manifest as large and radiate as far as it can when the person let it out), no matter how GYS thought he has bullet jacket himself, he is totally trapped in the frame especially one that involves making staff redundant, he is unable to ignore his inner senses, his inner voice. Confucius said “人之初,性本善。” Men are born kind. If anyone were to ask me what is my personal deepest memory of my career, my answer is making people redundant. Honestly that’s the hardest part of all that I have done. No matter how much grounds I can find to justify the act of redundancy and be objective about it, it is an act which is not only unpleasant, it drained off my whole body and mind. You would think so much about it before, you actually shake inside while executing it still questioning yourself if you are doing the right thing, and after the laid off staff left the building, you think about them a lot, especially if you have had mingling with their families outside work hours. etc. Many of you have heard how much I like QOR that I kept raving about it over and over. Using redundancy as the basis for GYS to start extracting out that spot of kindness deep inside him, the spot every human is born with, is the best idea where even this rich spoilt brat will have no where to hide no where to run but to face up to his inner voice that is telling him otherwise. From here set the foundation where our GYS is the most successful reversal of his role that he started with. There is no other better idea than using redundancy as the backdrop to extract deep into the deepest within every cast, that’s the ultimate crunch where everyone had to strip off layers of pretense and deal with what is the most important and immediate issues right in front of them.
As Nance said she was most touched by the scene where GYS flew the whole family of Mu Pu Chang for a family reunion, that’s the scene I believe has earned bucket of tears. That’s the icing of the cake as far as what GYS has done and was doing for Mu Pu Chang. Although things appeared to be absolutely disaster to GYS at the start of the unwanted living in to his apartment (the toothbrush saga is enough to drive GYS insane kekeke), again just as humans do when 2 of them are put under the same roof, when both of them have that spot of kindness within themselves, things go upscale positively. When GYS set up video communication for Mu Pu Chang and his overseas family who in the past Mu could only talk over the phone and never really knew how the growing children look like, from that very 1st act where GYS breaks down his barrier of having Mu in his apartment til the point of even wanting to continue to fake a bit (that Mu is now doing well living in such nice posh apartment so his overseas family can be very relieved about this lonely dad left in Korea living alone) for the sake of Mu’s pride in the eyes of Mu’s family, from that scene I know GYS’s kindness towards Mu will travel a long way, true enough as he surprised everyone when he flew the family back to Korea on the night of the team’s sucess. We later saw the saddest scene after Mu’s funeral when GYS returned to his apartment filled with memories of Mu’s presence. PSH absolutely demonstrated in his acting that total love and respect he has for Mu. Apart from Kang Woo, Mu Pu Chang is GYS’s important mentor. Mu is also the important bridge that made Tai See and GYS’s love a reality. Without Mu’s role, it’s rather hard to fill in the little pieces of jigsaws that ultimately join GYS and Tai See convincingly. It is the very reason when GYS realised Tai See knew of Mu’s plight and had been secretly protective and kind to Mu, it was that very 1st realisation that opens GYS’s heart towards Tai See. As Stefania Lupu said when a drama leaves memorable messages and positive interaction of the human kind, this type of drama is going to be enjoyed regardless of time. And I probably will continue to watch it 6 to 7 times every year……..!!!!
Dear Chai Hua I’m deeply impressed by your comments, that make me take them as a dissertation ,in which you analyse and interpret with subtle arguments the gorgeous charater Goo Yongsik. Excellent!
Dissertation!? Oh No, my ranting is more like it. You all know I love to blab and make lots of noise, especially on QOR. Just love it love it love it!
