After the excitement of the last couple of weeks, I thought it was time for some peace and quiet and to re-live my favourite drama again. It will be a while still to wait for Park Sihoo-ssi’s new movie “Neighborhood Hero”. It has not even begun shooting and will only be aired early next year!
Yes, I am addicted. Addicted to “Family Honor”, addicted to the love between Lee Kangsuk and Ha Dana, and like most of you, addicted to Park Sihoo-ssi. He is like caffeine in coffee, the more you drink, the more you crave for it.
Even though I got my first glimpse of Park Sihoo-ssi through the “Princess Man” (which I abandoned for a while as I don’t like weepy tragedies), I really got to know him in “Family Honor”. This drama, I watched, glued to the screen for a full 54 episodes. Okay, so I exaggerated that a bit, I fast forwarded the first 7-8 episodes and the rest of the sub-plots and concentrated on the Lee Kangsuk and Ha Dana love story. How many of you don’t?
“Family Honor” is a classic – a crossroad between the old, traditional Korean family values and the nouveau riche with their money driven behaviour. The writer has cleverly woven a web of intricate plots to enrich the overall storyline. Coupled with superb acting by seasoned actors and actresses and most importantly, anchored by an outstanding first time lead actor, Park Sihoo, the drama has won the hearts of many across the world and continue to do so. It was first screened in 2008, earning it an average Korean national rating of 21.2%, peaking at 27.2%, definitely no mean feat! It has since been telecasted in key markets in Japan, China and the rest of Asia, not just once but multiple times, and in China it hit nation-wide viewership through CCTV.
Park Sihoo-ssi’s fans love “Family Honor” – they raved about it, they analysed the characters, and there have been many stories, series in fact, written about the Kang-Dan couple. I read some of these Kang-Dan stories, ranging from a continuation from Episode 54, funny snippets of Kang-Dan after marriage, the next Kang-Dan generation and just started, the Kang-Dan diaries! Park Sihoo-ssi’s fans are so talented, they make good writers, if any broadcaster ever needed any. I believe their only condition would be that Park Sihoo-ssi stars in every one of them!
“Family Honor” ranks top in my list of any drama. I have watched it countless times, especially the last three years when there has been no new Park Sihoo dramas. I just can’t wait to have him back on the screen. I have been badly deprived! I miss his superb acting, his myriad expressions and his most engaging smile. I want my sunshine back, and soon!
Until then, it will be feeding my “Family Honor” addiction!

It is not I who become addicted, it is my heart!. Yes, I’ve become addicted to “FH” too, when I’ve discovered this drama. The impact was huge, and from that moment I couldn’t watch any other K. dramas without comparing it with “FH”. And all the time that drama failed. So, I’ve stopped waisting my time with other K.dramas in which the male lead is not PSH. He has become my icon actor. Neither American actor, nor British, or French or Italian a.s.o. can impress me as PSH. PSH can’t be compared with anyone! He is unique, with his natural gifts which he has been so richly blessed. And playin in this drama he has made me be addicted to “FH” for ever. Thank you PSH!
You have expressed my experience this last month when I come to know PSH watching Queen of Reversal. Never knew or heard of PSH until last month when my subscribed internet tv aired QOR. Day in day out I watched k drama without knowing any actor or actress names for the last decade. Then PSH striked me deeply as I get sucked in day by day following QOR. Natural human curiosity I researched to get to know more about this very talented actor. Now only I realised he has had several good shows, however I have only managed to buy Chengdongdam Alice DVD, still looking for the rest. Anyone could recommend where I could buy his DVDs?
You reflect what many of us have been through. As far as Park Sihoo-ssi’s fans are concerned, many have never been idol groupies until we chanced upon him and Family Honor. Life has never been the same afterwards! Check out Prosecutor Princess on DVDs if you are ever in Singapore. I believe that is still available. Otherwise, the online channels such as Vicki, gooddrama.net or the Chinese ones like PPTV, Youku etc might yield some results, but depending on the copyright coverage. Good luck!
Oh many thanks, I shall now haul my Singapore circle to go look for me. Right now I am soak in Chengdongdam Alice everynight, repeat watching in Korean and Mandarin so that I get to hear his voice plus get the exact meaning by listening to Mandarin as if only reading Mandarin subtitle I missed seeing the every move/act/expression 🙂
Yes you are spot on I am not a typical fan type of fan but PSH completely convinced me that it is worth rendering a fan’s support to this talented actor with a real passion and genuine heart when he acts.
Last week we search through the usual DVD places that we know of in Hong Kong, alas those shops have been closed I was very disappointed.
I managed to buy Prosecutor Princess on ebay, Yay! Another confession – this is my 1st ever ebay purchase.
??? We do amazing things when it comes to Park Sihoo-ssi that we even amaze ourselves.
Sihoossi Park 박시후 씨 Allowed me to ask this ignorant question : which is his official facebook page? I know this one is international fans page but curious why only 130 likes. Whereas there are several other facebook that look like his facebook pages some around 50k likes, one nearly 500k likes (but this one last update was Dec 2014). Wonder if he himself ever check in his fans’ facebook and if he does would that be only in Korean language page?…..natural fan’s curiousity, hope it’s alright to ask such questions.
Chai Hua Loke, I’m happy you’ve discovered one of the most talented K. actor PSH. You’ll become addicted to his K. dramas and movies, as all of us, his fans. He has thousands of fans all over the world, and one more with you too. Welcome to PSH Family.! If you want more information you can visit PSH4U blog too.
Thank You Stefania. I can admit to that addiction : after Queen of Reversals, I am now soaked in Chengdongdam Alice, a show that seemingly light and nothingless at the start but kept me up late night as the plot thickens and again showcase PSH’s depth and strength in acting.
CDDA is anything but light And nothingness…it has a lot of depth if you just dive deeper beyond the surface. Once you finish CDDA, please read my article on “Did I write that?” And tell me what you think. I’d love some feedback. Many thanks!
Yeap definitely many layers underneath that seemingly light and nothingness beginning which is the success of the story. Will find your article when I finish viewing.
Sihoossi Park 박시후 씨 Where do I find your write up “Did I Write That?” . I’ve finished C. Alice now, would love to read your review about this drama. Thanking you in advance
Great to know that you have finished watching CDDA. I hope you enjoyed watching it. You can check out my main website at https://parksihoossi.com. Here’s the link to that article. https://parksihoossi.com/park-sihoo-did-i-write-that/. The one drama you should watch that will really get you hooked will be “Family Honor’. Long at 54 episodes but you can skip the sub-plots though good to get through them so that you have more depth. And also remember “The Princess Man” historical which is award winning.
Sihoossi Park 박시후 씨 Thank you thank you! I will read up and revert to you. Yes I have now learnt the names of his dramas. Waiting anxiously for Prosecutor Princess dvd to arrive (from ebay). Meanwhile I repeat watching C Alice in both spoken languages and both English and Chinese subtitles to get every little bit of juice out of the clever scripting, how I wish I know Korean to really know what they actually said. For instance .Pak said 抓狂 I wonder if that’s really the closest translation. Park is the star I watched of course, nevertheless credit must be given to the script writer, the director etc all the film crew. Brilliant is my verdict. Or should I say more than brilliant in exploring subjects which aren’t easy to define yet expressed with superb choice of words. I do intend to slowly watch all his dramas provided I can lay my hand on them. The next one I am intrigued is the Confession of Murder as I really like to see how he takes on that role (I love all murders story books, movies :)) Queen of Reversal is a show I want to have dvd for keep though I have seen it on my subscribed tv. I thought QOR is epic when it comes to timing/sequence and the words used in all actors’ exchanges, always delivered with a punch, and the love involved among all, not just the 2 leads. Of course our star Park holds all the epic over epic moments if this can be understood what I am trying to say. I admire how you Nance able to express so well with words giving the exact meaning of those not easy to put in context stuff, I lack this ability to express them in writing 🙂
Ooh your write up is long, I have saved as favourite to read later. Though TGIF (thank God is Friday but still need to go work haha)Thanks again.
Sihoossi Park (Nance) :Ok I have read your “Did I write that”, allow me to blab a few words 🙂 1st I need to say that I need to rewatch the whole series as you said this show is not the usual love drama, it’s thought provoking lots that’s said and done needed some digesting (and savouring). I also wonder if the DVD I got had been censored as I didn’t see some of the outfits worn by Älice” (the female lead) in photos of CDD advertisements etc, other than the 1st party , the French encounter where she saved the father and the bride’s dress, she is always in a big container looking long thick coat with tight pants on and I thought come on she could wear a little bit better than that? No doubt the plot the materials chosen e.g the painting story etc are all very clever use of the various things that tie up the whole story and delivered the message of the drama. Whether this is De Best drama by our dearest star Park Sihoo I can’t form that conclusion since I have yet to watch his other dramas. As I mentioned I would love to see how he takes on the role of that murderer of 10 (?) women and having no female opposite in that Confession of Murder show (the little bit of here there infor I gathered). Yes CDD is the show that drawn out the many facets of acting that Park delivered in excellence performance. However CDD did not wrench my heart as deep as Queen of Reversal. In Queen of Reversal his affection and love for the female lead comes as more convincing (to me) than in CDD. Other than the fact that Alice gives him the answer that in this world there is still true and pure love which he took it as a 3rd person when he found out Alice’s love story with her ex, I didn’t see THE thing that really binds him towards Alice. In one scene he said to his ex gf that he has seen the soft and loving kind look in her eyes so she must have had really loved him I thought that could be the thing that will bind him and this ex in the ending of the story. Whereas with Alice (sorry I kept calling the female lead Alice as I haven’t grasped the spelling of her name in the show) there is not one moment of her interaction that touches his very deep soft spot, if I have expressed this well. Compared to QOR, the fact that he has the strong urge to do well in his career driven by his need to make a full changeover of his life hence unconsciously attracted by this strong positive force exuded from Hwang Tai See, plus that very scene when both of them revealed their deepest vulnerable spot when they sat on the steps ate the chocolate, that’s the point that start to pierce through both hearts. That’s a equal revelation by both boy and girl. Which I don’t see in CDD. Yes we can say in both QOR and CDD the fact that the female lead possess the things that compliment and complete his needs for a meaningful future together are euqally strong hence it is both convincing enough that he would love and acts for his love like how he has done in both CDD & QOR, nevertheless my opinion is CDD lacks one scene that deals with boy and girl where they share or cement their most inner vulnerable need. It is more of boy and girl each pursued their perceived understanding of the other person and developed their individual liking and love on their own private agenda. So in the end when all are revealed and said and put into perspective, it didn’t deliver the ooomph effect that I get from QOR. In fact if they change the story that he ends up with his ex I also wouldn’t be disappointed coz the one scene that gave me that ooomph comes from the ex having pulled the plug with pride and steadfast strength. 🙂 🙂
P/s QOR’s Ajuma’s Jackie Onassis’s style is also not my cup of tea but it makes it even stronger statement that his love for her is beyond that, and for her role and character those stoid proper serious look suited her perfectly (even in days when her composition of colour etc is out we can take it that just like many of us in busy juggling corporate jobs and family, we are oblivious to the details of our dressing), so why am I saying Alice in CDD could have dressed a little bit better? Well she is supposed to be professional image maker so it will be a little bit more convincing and pleasing to viewers like me that Alice puts a little bit of efforts (yes she did improve after the feedback from Shen Inn Wah) but not enough. My 2 cents worth of review 🙂
Chai Hua Loke, congratulations for your comprihensive analysis of “CDDA” in comparison with “QOR”. Although I like immensly PSH’s acting in “CDDA”, that has made this drama to be a success, my “Oscar ” goes to “QOR”. At my first view of “QOR” I was not so impressed, but after reviewing it second time, I discovered as you say “the revelation” of this drama : Hawang Tae See, a strong woman that hasn’t accepted to be trampled under the feet of her husband, who hasn’t accepted to shutting her eyes when her husband tried to cheat her, who was so proud of her intelligence and professional qualities that have helped her to earn her own living, and pay her own way to be as happy as anybody on earth. Her sense of independence and security, of ambition and determination have positively influenced Goo Yong Sik to change his way in his career to a successful businessman. Yes, I also agree that” the deepest vulnerable spot” happened when they were sitiing on the steps, eating chocolate , and confessing each other who was the most unfortunate one. Such a touching scene I haven’t seen in “CDDA” to impress me and choose as my favourite drama. Not forgetting PSH whose acting in “QOR” was brilliant too.
Good morning Stefania Lupu, thank you for your analysis which is brilliant! I hope PSH fans’ page is as such where fans like us could pour our heart out analysing his dramas. Yes I totally agree with you and Nance that PSH’s acting in CDDA is the most comprehensive with a wide coverage of mood swings etc. Perhaps it is too short a series that’s why the script writer did not dwell deep enough about that very important scene where viewers can be fully convinced that their love for each other started from a time when all layers are peeled off and each actually sees and understands that spot within each other. Me too I didn’t really follow QOR at the beginning I actually missed many parts where PSH appeared in the early series of QOR, just like how I watch all the rest of K drama at the begining of any show the tv is on but I potter on with my kitchen and house chores. Then the 1st time PSH caught my attention is when he sat there observing the behaviour/response of all the nervous employees being interviewed for potential layoff. I was attracted by that cold face and that seemingly mean eyes as he observed on with complete silence and not even casting his eyes on the people. From there I sat and watch the full run of an hour everyday. I watch some repeat on computer internet to catch back those bits I missed but not have not done very well as some episodes were cut or not complete in You-tube. So I am going to buy QOR dvd :).
I must admit that QOR is not my favorite Park Sihoo drama because I don’t like an older man, younger man storyline. However, I simply love his acting in QOR which is why he managed to turn his No 2 role into the leading role. hE was brilliant as Goo Yongsik. And in GYS I see the making of JTC in CDDA, that little lost boy and rebellious me against the world/my father guy. As you said, 16 episodes don’t give sufficient time for depth and character development. That unfortunate
unfortunately is the current stage of Korean dramas. Their past success of having longer dramas are now undermined by over commercialization.
Sihoossi Park 박시후 씨 Oh he turned from no. 2 role to leading!! Fantastic! That’s our boy!! I wasn’t aware of that.
Can understand why you don’t like older woman younger man storyline. The very thing that I like QOR so much is normally such storyline isn’t attractive yet he managed to inject so much unexpected stuff moreover so very convincing with his persistence (which can all be understood why he is so attracted by her inner beauty) into the show that’s the very thing that captivated me and for once I asked who is this actor? If the female lead is a much younger woman with the look that is normally his type (just like how he repeatedly said and reminded himself that she is really not his type) then I bet QOR will just be another k drama that cross the screen of my tv and I never come to know such a name of Park Sihoo and will never have discovered the pleasure of talking here with you ladies.
