IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF OPPA PARK SIHOO-SSI’S KANAZAWA
With a spiky hard shell, the sea urchin looks much like a spherical porcupine. Caught unawares it can give you the worst stings when you have the misfortune to step on it while having fun in the sea! No laughing matter, mind you, I have seen how it hurts first hand!
And the taste? Some like it lots, others like it not! Sea urchin or Uni in Japanese is an acquired taste, much like the King of fruit, the durian! At first sight, its monstrous spiky look could have turned some people off already. Then when it is cut open revealing its orange inside, more would drop out. Now, if you know what you will be eating, you just might drop it like a ton of bricks! Yes, the gonads or reproductive organs that produce its roe, and not the roe itself! So know why some folks are of two minds over eating sea urchin now?
Me? Just like our Oppa Park Sihoo-ssi, I like it lots! It took a little getting used to at first! Now, I love its smooth, custard like texture, with its salty sea smell and taste. Just thinking about eating sea urchin makes my mouth water! Such a delicacy that should be slowly savoured!
Did you see Oppa’s Kanazawa rendezvous with his brother Woohoo-ssi in the Omicho market? Well, we headed there on our arrival in Kanazawa after dropping off our luggage at our hotel. So excited we were thinking about the sea urchin and luscious huge oyster feast. But, we were in for disappointment! We missed the stall’s opening hours by minutes! Not only that, as luck would have it, the stall owner decided to have an unplanned closure of their stall in the next couple of days! Ahhh!
Luckily, we could still make it on our last day in Kanazawa before we headed out to Osaka! Yeah!
But though we were there nice and early at what we were told was the opening time for the stall, we had to kick our heels for a couple of hours as they had to prepare. Nope, customers don’t come first here. It is at the stall owners’ own sweet time. And we were the only customers there at that time.
But was it worth the wait? Absolutely! The freshest catch. No need for any additional condiments. My sea urchin was a rice bowl, unlike the sea urchin only dish for Park Sihoo-ssi! I guess being a super star has its privileges! And his oyster was ginormous compared to the one I had! No complaints, mind you, just observation! Our growing boy needs his food!
The Omicho Market in Kanazawa is without doubt highly recommended…so many fish stalls and different types of fish! The freshest catch, you will be spoilt for choice!
So, are you game for some sea urchin or are you of two minds?

😍🤗😘
😳er it does take courage to consume this sea urchin… only way I be brave enough to try it is with my eyes closed tightly 🤦♀️
The sea urchin is so delicious, I have to try it.😋
Our gourmand looking around and your remark, Nance, “Now what else is there to eat?” they fit in such a fun way. 😄
The day you ate, probably for fishermen it was a less fortunate day, fishing for small oysters and a few sea urchins.
Park Si Hoo-ssi I think he just ordered two portions in one. As for oyster, what can I say? She grew with pride instantly, when she learned that Sihoossi would eat it.
In the area where I live, sea food is not the first place in daily consumption and even less marine delicacies. But if I had the opportunity, I think I would try to see how brave I am.😜
I know too, one mind overseas in windian Ocean… Who likes him kekeke
