What is the lunar new year celebration without the feasting?
Korea offers the freshest food ingredients, particularly when it comes to seafood! And the freshest catch is always raw! Raw deliciousness!
I was no fan of the raw for the longest time. My nose turned up in disdain at anything the likes of sashimi. I guess it has to do with how I was brought up. My mother believes that due to hygiene reasons, food must be eaten cooked.
So at one point in time, I could associate with Park Sihoo-ssi’s Goo Yongsik in “Queen of Reversals”. Picky with his food, he shuddered at the thought of eating raw food. Even when his father treated him to the most expensive sashimi meal of the freshest and most mouth watering raw deliciousness, he wasn’t impressed. In fact, when his father asked why he wasn’t eating, he retorted that he never ate raw stuff! His dad ought to know his son by then! What bitterness from a child lacking in love and paternal attention. Poor Goo Yongsik!
Like him, I cannot stomach the wiggly live octopus with their suctions pads still in top form as they struggle from being eaten. Yikes, even imagining this gives me the shudders!
But now, things have changed for me, though I still cannot stomach live octopus!
A good friend introduced me to Japanese sashimi. It was her treat for getting a promotion, so it was a meal I could not refuse. Am I glad I didn’t because sashimi is raw deliciousness! I fell in love with it at the very first bite!
Those succulent, raw deliciousness are yummilicous indulgences whenever I go to Korea! Straight off the shell oysters, abalone, clams and other shellfish, fresh off the fishing boats. The fish catch of the day, thinly sliced sashimi style and lightly dipped in wasabi laced soya sauce! Raw crabs and prawns marinated in wine and soya sauce! Lip smacking, finger licking good! And so many other unfamiliar, yet delectable raw surprises just waiting to be discovered! Only the brave dare to venture! 🙂
So atypical lunar new year fare, but when you are stuffed with rich, gloriously sumptuous traditional feast when you go visiting from one house to another, the thought of simple, raw deliciousness is just the treat! Yums!
Sashimi anyone when we pass through Seoul enroute to Park Sihoo-ssi’s birthday party in Buyeo? Aww, but that is still a long while away!
Sashimi anyone? Like now? 🙂 I am hungry for some raw deliciousness!

Good appetite with those raw delicioussness! And I think I’d like to try Japanese sashimi, you describe to be so delicious and tasteful. Because “Gourmandise is an impassioned, rational and habitual preference for all those objects that flatter the sense of taste.”[Jean- Anthelme Brillat-Savarin “The Psychology of Taste”]
