I admit, I am picky when it comes to food. There are quite a lot of things I don’t like eating. These include spring onions, onions, celery, capsicum, parsley, lamb, eel…and more. Sometimes I can be totally anal that I would pick out every bit of anything I don’t eat from a dish!
Our family likes eating in, so we usually have home cooked meals. Mum would always ask what we wanted to eat and our standard response would be “anything”. She would complain that “anything” was not that easy to cook, especially for me as I am so picky! Sometimes, I wonder why she even bothered to ask when she always end up making the decisions on what to cook!
While I love my sashimi, I don’t take every type of raw sashimi…definitely not those wriggly, iggly squids that the Korean so love and no raw beef!
This time, when I went for Park Sihoo-ssi’s Birthday Tour 2018, I wanted to try more of his favorite restaurants. I had a raw deal!
After going on a spree of discovery of Park Sihoo-ssi’s drama “My Golden Life” filming locations, we decided to have dinner at Sae Byuk Jib 새벽집 or House of Dawn. This is a Michelin guide restaurant with their inspectors’ quoting “This 24-hour no-frills eatery has been feeding the famished with classic Korean fare like bibimbap, beef barbecue and stews since 1994. The food is simple yet tasty, prepared around the clock with fresh ingredients. The façade and décor are uncomplicated, reflecting the food it offers.” I would add, the restaurant is a maze of nooks and corners cramped with dining seats as they try to maximise their space. Just manoeuvring around is a tight squeeze and don’t be surprised if you get lost!
Rumors had it that this is one of our man’s favorite restaurant and he is a regular. So of course when we made our reservation, we just had to ask for a seat where Park Sihoo-ssi sat previously and we got a small cosy room right at the back of the restaurant. I understand that every time he visited he would order the raw beef bibimbap. Being a galbi or beef restaurant and it seemed Sae Byuk Jib’s Yukhoe or raw beef bibimbap is a must try. It is simply bibimbap topped with raw beef. Yikes! Park Sihoo-ssi, couldn’t you have liked something else? Because you like it, I just had to try it, even though I don’t take raw beef!
The Yukhoe Bibimbap was beautifully served with fresh, multi-colored stripes of vegetables and seaweed neatly arranged on top of rice and topped with red raw beef stripes. The set came with the usual array or banchan or appetisers, a vegetable salad and a piping hot soup. I love the banchan, especially the sauced turnips! The salad I promptly gave away…it was a plateful of spring onions!
After my iPhone had its feast, I started mixing the Yukhoe Bibimbap throughly, adding in the sauce for flavor. I must say that the bibimbap tasted surprisingly delicious even with the raw beef. If not for the fact I ordered this dish, I won’t even know there is raw beef in it! But psychologically, there was already a barrier put in place. I was thankful for that small pot of hot soup! But horrors! My first spoonful uncovered two large chunks of something else picky me won’t eat! Congealed cow blood! This Seonjitguk soup is yet another test for dare devils! And I am certainly not one!
Luckily, that bowl of bibimbap was huge and laden with vegetables and rice, else I would have gone hungry that night! A Michelin guide restaurant, I was expecting a large bill for the food, but it came up to just KRW 8,000 for the Yukhoe Bibimbap set.
So, not so raw a deal after all!
HOW TO GET THERE?

Oh Dear, Nance, the things you don’t eat spring onion onion celery these are the basics I cook with so many dishes. I eat them almost everyday. Raw beef when it is of good quality and fresh, they are simply yummy. I can imagine when mixed into bibimbap the whole dish will be simply yummy, that’s why our man likes it. Nance, you and I are very different when it comes to food, I eat anything except dog and snake meat. 🙂
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후-씨 朴施厚君 wait until you eat our award winning lamb you wouldn’t categorise lamb as lamb that has strong smell. I get remarks like the best meat they ever eaten despite be4 that they said exactly the same thing you just said. 😉
Hahaha! We do agree on the dog and snake though! But seriously, I don’t like the smell and strong taste of lamb. I remember making a trip to Inner Mongolia and they claimed to have the freshest lamb given their unspoiled environment. That was about the only meat they serve and since I was at an official banquet, I could not decline and had to eat it.I must admit, it was probably the most “edible” lamb I had and it was simply boiled. Even then, if I can decline, I would, just not my cut of meat 🙂
Raw beef.. Eeek ! PSH’s favourite or not….. definitely not for me !
Hahahah
