Yesterday, we did a retrospective of what went on in the world of Park Sihoo-ssi and ParkSihooSsi.com in 2021. It was a year which I considered to be the least active as there was hardly any new news. In fact it was mainly retrospective of his career, past works and media interviews.
So what lies ahead? What is the prospective for 2022?
If you think I have inside information on what goes on with Park Sihoo-ssi and his plans for the future, let me dispel that misconception. Just like you, I am not privy to anything about him. I only share what I come across and read or see. Oh, and being opinionated, I also share how I view things and what I personally think should be done. I could keep mum, but because of genuine affection and sincerely wanting to support a brilliant actor whom I consider to be like a brother, I voice my opinions. Maybe he doesn’t read, maybe he doesn’t want to listen or maybe he has his own plans. His future is in his hands, we can only do so much to support him.
Do I have the real prospective for 2022? The answer is no. I only opine.
First most, his Korean remake of the successful American crime beat series “The Mentalist” should be coming on stream in 2022. Exactly when, we don’t know yet. Its release is much anticipated but has been delayed and then delayed yet again. It could be tied to HBO Max’s roll out in Asia which has been delayed due to licensing rights of some of its original contents. For now, the streaming platform is only available in the US and some Caribbean and Latin American countries. The establishment and recruitment to staff the HBO Max offices in the Singapore Asia hub and Korea are in the works. Hopefully these issues will get resolved soon and HBO Max can be rolled out across Asia and with it, Park Sihoo-ssi’s “The Mentalist”. The rumour on the street is that it will be the second half of 2022 when they roll out. Cross our fingers!
Other than this upcoming work, is there anything else in the horizon? For now, we don’t know. But in his Christmas greeting, our Oppa did indicate that he is reviewing his next project, so something must be coming up. And we hope soon as it has been almost a year and the half since his last drama “Wind, Cloud and Rain” (“Kingmaker: Change of Destiny”) went off air. He seriously needs to have something on air soon or risk losing his presence in the minds of the audience, especially with aggressive old timers and upcoming fresh faces occupying and crowding the limited air space.
And the most important thing that our Oppa has to do is to re-establish ties and build new ones. “Silence is golden” and “Less is more” don’t hold water in the fast changing entertainment world. When face-to-face interactions cannot take place, then these have to be compensated and doubled-up virtually. Establishing ties with decision makers for movie and drama investment, the general public and all fans; they need attending to as they have been sadly neglected (at least the fans have been neglected). Like I said in my earlier articles to start off 2022, “Out of sight is out of mind”. I shan’t talk about decision makers here as I don’t have the knowledge of the inner works but I shall delve on fans and general audience.
Frequently keeping in touch with fans and the general audience can help to keep their mind space and heart space. And by fans and audience, to be blunt, the Japanese are not the only ones. The Koreans, Chinese and international fans are equally, if not more important. The world has changed. A star known only in one or two markets no longer holds weight for producers and production companies. The global market is now within reach through streaming platforms and their growth are phenomenal. If a star has little appeal to global audiences and his or her works are not trending or being actively searched, these platforms will not buy into his or her works or invest in him or her. And in the big scheme of things, the Japan market is but a small and shrinking part of the enlarging global sales.
So get a broader view beyond your blinked vision and colored lenses. Your audience and fans are not just the Japanese. The more you alienate your other audience and fans from other geographies, the more you lose in the long run. Size up where you are now compared to back in 2013, or even 2017. Do you see a big difference? Where are your loyal fans and how many do you still have left? Isn’t it time to get cracking fast before it is too late?
And when you lose, you need to build to fill the gap and more. Is anything being done or planned for? What happened to those social media postings on Instagram and Weibo? And where there were tons of media features in the past, there have been but weak squeaks in the last few years, even at the height of “My Golden Life” in 2017 and “Wind, Cloud and Rain” (“Kingmaker: Change of Destiny”) in 2019. Such rare opportunities are lost when they could have been leveraged to build your presence in the eyes of producers, directors, production houses, general audience and fans. When will the next opportunity come again, if ever? Hard work, lost. A pity!
Prospective 2022? I hope Oppa Park Sihoo-ssi and his agency, actually agencies since he has two now, will take heed of these views and take action. It would have been so easy to just let go and move on when there isn’t anything much going on to sustain interest, and with other priorities in this uncertain Covid-ridden world. If not for the love and support of Park Sihoo-ssi, I won’t even bother to pen these down. The thoughts are not new, but re-emphasized as in my view, it has come to a critical point that if not addressed, the downhill will be a very steep one where there will be only a slim chance to recover love lost.
So I say again, Oppa Park Sihoo-ssi, help us, help you. It is as simple as that.
