CELEBRATING THE 6TH ANNIVERSARY OF PARK SIHOO-SSI’S “QUEEN OF REVERSALS”!
庆祝施厚君的“逆转女王”第6周年!
Every time I listened to this very old, sad song about a blind orphan, I find my eyes misty with tears. “Nobody’s child” the song was called and first recorded in 1949 by Hank Snow. There have been so many versions since then but each equally moving.
“I’m nobody’s child, nobody’s child.
I’m like a flower, just growing wild.
No mommy’s kisses and no daddy’s smiles,
Nobody wants me, I’m nobody’s child.”
Does this not seem like Park Sihoo-ssi’s Goo Yongsik in “Queen of Reversals”? He was a nobody’s child, though luckier as he was neither blind nor an orphan. But still, he was an unloved boy, whom no one really cared about. Growing up wild as the child in the song.
Being illegitimate, a fling his dad had outside of marriage, Goo Yongsik never knew his real mother. He was thrown to the wife of his father to be brought up by her. She hated him and taught her own children to hate him too, even though on the surface she appeared to be most supportive of her James. And his father was just too focused on building his own power and influence in the Korean corporate world to spare him any time of the day.
So unloved and left to his own devices, he was being shuffled about. Bullied by his brothers. So called mother scheming to get him out of sight and out of the way. Being banished to the US and every possible stop pulled so that he would not return. He was like a pariah to his siblings and “mother”.
So this “nobody’s child” could only fend for himself as best as he could. By going with the flow, hiding behind a flippant facade, adopting a devil may care attitude and pretending he had no care in the world to hide his pain.
He made my heart ache each and every time I watched him. His actions and expressions hiding his true feelings and his hurts. That sadness of being “nobody’s child” yearning for love and family affection just make you want to reach out to him in comfort!
Such was Goo Yongsik, nobody’s child, so perfectly portrayed by Park Sihoo-ssi! Outstandingly brilliant performance as always!

Topic, a little pity! Shi Houjun, the characters in the play set, in fact, the state of extreme lack of love! Fortunately, not a small world, met the leading lady. Although the younger man, did not influence sexual gratification, many pictures, two people get along with the soft, warm, romantic, sweet! Between each other, the transmission of love, is the most important! Look up to see a smile, always feel a sense of security, for any emotion, is the basis of enduring as the universe! Each person, the good, to love their own people, the harvest is the feelings, the value is to cherish!
Goo Yong Sik is being introduced as a nobody’s child, a playboy-womanizer, has only one friend his close mate male PA cum sidekick, hides himself behind his cheekiness and playfulness, However he doesn’t exhibit these qualities that you would expect from such an introduction. Like Nance said “devil may care” attitude, yet he is the one who cares the most and took his trouble to make effective changes to situations for people who are living without hope. He is a quiet positive thinker, generous with his love, has big capacity of understanding of what make others ticked, intelligent and sharp in his decisions though very much guided by his heart (which is the things that really pull our heartstrings as Nance said). It’s supposed to be a love comedy but these unfortunate attributes attached to who he was born with have earned buckets of tears from me. Even the young male fan told me he was so touched by the scene Yong Sik 1st met his “mother”.
Nance very good comparison, just as you said PSH is not an orphan but bypassed by chance, therefore has no new projects and we can only see in replays it represented the “queen of reversals”. I do not know those who know him and I know his qualities and why do not propose a project worthy of this great and beloved actor. PSH matter what play series, romantic, action etc. He has demonstrated his ability to identify with the character and send us something that made us to stay glued to the screen to watch it very carefully and we captured every interest. Hence our admiration and respect for him. Anyone who would like to downplay the qualities of this great actor by reruns stands and are undisputed. It is an actor who you want to see him every day, making other other serials because it is capable of. We have the patience to wait you can tell us soon to have a new project, so I feel.
Anita, after watching his splendid performances in each and every of his dramas and series, all other actors pale in comparison. He has chalked up such high standards in his acting skills I rather rewatch the few he has to stay enchanted than be bored by the works of actors with lesser brilliance.
Dorothy Ooi Therefore I am also annoyed because those who should see and appreciate them his qualities do not. He is far brighter as you said well, but be careful when making a top 10 Korean actors who get into that top or knee frog does not get compared PSH. I do not know what happens with the producers and directors who make castings. Know that I do not come to watch the latest series.
Anita Baba, on 19 Sept when KBS rebroadcast TPM, when finally KBS seems to have awaken to what is good drama. I had my most vehement expressions lashing out on my public instagram that I am sick of being bombarded (marathon run a whole Sunday) by KBS World with sub standard works example some fake war story that took the limelight of the whole blinded world. I usually prescribe to the golden rule that in any public media, only say good things, never say any negative things. However on that occasion I just couldn’t care less and lashed out why the industry is so blind so unfair so ***$$$###@@@@ all the foul words that I don’t even know what words I meant to yell out…..here lies PSH the best jewel of the K drama industry but the whole world flock to fire like moths towards some absolutely sub standard drama, script, acting, unnecessarily string out plot just as to give the thirsty audience more viewing of the frolicking of the 2 leads (that last episode where such absolutely ridiculous scene was stretched is an absolute joke. I didn’t watch all but caught some here and there just to understand why it was such a hit). Even looks of it’s lead actor is so annoying to my eyes – eyes of an ordinary reasonable human being who at our age I am not looking for perfection but still……..some looks are simply annoying when overexposed over banked and over praised with unmatching descriptions. Excuse my language I just don’t find dangling vulture neck with visible goose bumps skin and portruding Adam’s apple holding an improportionately far too small head on overly worked out too broad a shoulder to hold that small head, I seriously don’t find that kind of look that appealing BUT that’s the current flavour of the year. What more when the round flatten face reminds me of my streetfood in Cantonese “Ham Chin Peng” which is basically a round dough of bread type after risen to a ball get flatten but still leave enough mounts of flesh so the teeth could nicely sink into the cheeks….oh…my saliva …..quick, where’s my handky. My apologies to all reading that I can be such a mean woman. I am this mean because the unfair blinded K industry has driven me nuts (so if I get sued can I hide behind this excuse of undue distress of world going blind …….??)
Chai Hua Loke It is true what you say and I feel the same, PSH is not appreciated at its real value. His qualities and talent no longer has one. The actors who are now really appreciate that they are neither beautiful nor as talented PSH. Nor do I know what criteria are choosing producers and directors. I’m really sorry for our beloved PSH that is not where we want. Thank you for exposing your ideas resembling those of mine and I am happy when I see that are oamneni who think like me.
Dear Anita Baba having vented my frustration I am back to my positive outlook : I am confident PSH’s come back will be a winner soon! We just need to be a bit more patient and I know PSH will nail it. By then we don’t need to be bothered by creatures with vulture necks and maize heads.
Nobody’s child! It’s such a sad and painful feeling for each child thinking that he is nobody’s child. And this happens to Goo Yongsik , the child his brother told him:”I don’t think you belong to our family.” And Goo Yongsik suffers because his family thinks he is nobody’s child, because nobody knows the real him, because nobody knows how many times he cried in his room, when nobody was watching him, because nobody knows how many times he lost hope, because nobody knows his thoughts going through his mind, because nobody worries about his feelings, because nobody knows how sad he is! Although all his employees think that ,being the son of the President , he is rich, he is happy, he is favored by his fate. He tries to hide his misfortune , he knows and feels himself, that nobody in his family, his stepmother or his stepbrothers, doesn’t like him. or love him, or care him. That’s why he desperately wants to meet his birthmother. I think in “Q of R” we find the most touching, exciting, moving moment , we don’t find in his other dramas, when he meets his birthmother, that impressed me so much, tears flooding my eyes. Such a moment belonging to a melodrama as well. PSH ‘s interpretation of Goo Yongsik is so convincing , so real looking for his mother’s love, that reminds me another moment , a real one, on one of his birthday anniversary , when he openly asked his mother;”Do you love me? Please love me.” So even PSH needs his mother ‘s love and understanding, because he is “Somebody;s child”. He is the beloved son of his mother!
Stefania – I am already tearing reading your comments as I recollect the 2 very poignant scenes in QOR, one of Yong Sik meeting his supposedly birthmother and the later when he did get to meet his birthmother. PSH delivered such a convincing interpretation of inward sadness and sorrow through his expression of teared up eyes and quivering lips — I must have cried buckets. Now I tear again discovering from you he has once asked his mother if she loves him. Oh wow! Of course she does. It’s so evident. And we his fans love him so too. Very much, he must know.
Dorothy, it seems that in each role, he interprets in his dramas , we can find something connected to his life, better said, borrowed from his own life. And than we can explain ourselves why his characters become so truthfull, so veridical, so beautiful, revealing suffering, kindness, honesty, generosity, courage, faith. loyalty , power, as H.W. Longfellow said:” In all things the supreme excellence is simplicity.” And for “his supreme excellence ” in his interpretation , we love him.
PSH gives out a part of himself in every of his works, in every of his activities. By right he should not be called an actor. He is actually PSH in everything we come to meet with. He is PSH, log stock and barrel (everything). And how he achieved ” In all things the supreme excellence is simplicity.”, is because that is him, the simplest way ever, rid of all the layers of disguise.
Although GYS is my favorite character and I feel very much attached to him, so far I have not been able to put into words my exact feelings regarding him. I am still not. Very much unlike me, because most of the time when I put first word on paper they flow by themselves. as being orchestrated by something outside me. However, not this time. Anyway, you analyzed GYS’s character pretty well Nance. As a nobody’s child he is left to survive on his own strength. Putting up a mask nobody seems to care looking behind. Considering it from this point, he is a boy-man with a very strong character. He grows above all opposition to his person not being wanted as being a nuissance to his stepmother and stepbrother and his father too busy in the company world to even notice what’s going on inside this son of his. The longing for his birthmother has always been present and also the wish to share this with someone. Being vulnerable and so strong at the same time. That’s what continues to pull me to GYS again and again.
Hope to hear your words when that moment as you said when words would flow as orchestrated and they are words that you could associate your feeling about GYS
I can assimilate the so vulnerable yet so strong description
Shall we say GYS himself his personality his character his progress anything that is weak or vulnerable all get reversed..GYS in a nut shell is the king of reversal
Chai Hua Loke Maybe that moment will never come. After my holidays in Seoul I realized one thing. When something or someone touches me deeply I seem to be unable to express myself. I always let those moments pass by.
Chai Hua Loke I can find myself in your words
Wilma I get very attracted by Nance’s site because her writing fills that side of me the inability to express with words. I am not one who can write well, only good at ranting blabbing. Hence I truly enjoyed reading the many great writings of Nance, Stefania’s, as well as my mentor Dorothy Ooi’s good English. I hope PSH takes interest in reading Nance’s as well as Stefania’s and yours and the many other fans’s whose works I haven’t reached. Over time one will come to realise how such good works improve our own linguistic skill, and improve our own understanding of our feeling of things that we could not easily engage with words, and made us understand ourselves better. Just like how we were urged to read the newspapers when we started out learning a language. PSH are you following here? 🙂 Therefore Wilma, by all means when you find that you come to express in words that describe your attachment with GYS, please share with us.
Wilma van Zwietering Wilma I think I am the same in that til now I still have not crystallised my own words how I would describe my meeting up with PSH. I went into detailed analysis by split of every second but those were observations like an impartial 3rd party. It’s an account of what physically happened. If those moments of yours can’t be crystallised by words I can fully understand Wilma, no pressure intended.
Chai Hua Loke If ever comes that moment I sit down and start to write down what’s coming from the heart without even having a clue where and how it will end, I will surely share with you. At least, I know how it feels when that special flow is coming into me ☺
