Spicy fish stew anyone?
Oppa Choi Dokyung in KBS drama “My Golden Life” turned his nose up at the spicy fish stew in Seoul’s Namdaemun market when he first saw it. His absolute freak for cleanliness and eating healthy, organic food would not allow him to even so much as touch the mushy slop being served. Not with its dented, unwashed-looking metal container and when he couldn’t figure out what was in the brown mash of so-called stew.
Well, like Oppa Choi, I turned away that spicy fish stew too…but for a different reason. Like Chai Hua who would not eat snakes, my abhorrence to eating snakes goes beyond just snakes but to anything resembling a snake. Sorry, for Hong Kongers who love their snakes and consider it a delicacy to indulge in during the winter season, this just isn’t something I can stomach.
So seeing the fish used to make this spicy fish stew – the Hairtail or Cutlass as the shop called it, which is a long, flat-bodied fish with a most ugly face, like a snake – I was not too keen. But heck, if Oppa Choi finally ate this dish with such relish after he dropped all pretentious airs of being a chaebol, I just had to try!
Four of us with an ambitious itinerary for the day, took on a double portion of this spicy fish stew set (minimum order) right after we had a heavy lunch of chicken feet and spicy tteokbokki! Of course we insisted on the table where Park Sihoo-ssi’s Oppa Choi sat and had to patiently wait, but we got what we wanted.
The stew set came with banchan or appetizers, fried Hairtail, steamed egg, the main event of spicy fish stew and white rice. As can be expected, I only took tasting portion of the stew, eating the veg though I skipped the fish. The other sisters who ate it thought the food was delicious! So I will go with that.
Once the main ingredients of fish and vegetables were all chowed down, what was left was the saucy stew in the dented metal bowl. We picked out the remaining fish bones as a precaution and then dumped the bowl of rice in the mental bowl and gave it a thorough mix, a la Oppa Choi! And then we tucked right in!
Yummilicious was our conclusion, fish eaten or not. And during his recent Japan KBS “My Golden Life” Commemorative Broadcast event held recently in Shinjuku, Japan, Park Sihoo-ssi also highly recommended it. So try you must!
So there, another “My Golden Life” location spot bites the dust! What’s next!

Thanks Nance for sharing this very significant experience the fish stew. Which we know now as you have shared earlier that PSH the man himself did like the fish stew dish though CDK’s very 1st encounter with this dish he acted like this is the last thing he would ever eat on earth. I do eat eel which many also felt it’s looks is rather off putting as eel too resembles snakes. I especially love the Japanese eel bento set. But anything that is snakes, nuh, not for me. The thought of eating that creature all my goosebumps just stood up. I am with you, every snake eating season Hong Kongers would make it a special occasion, gathering around to eat their expensive banquet. But I would never be able to bring myself to partake these banquets. Maybe if you had not seen the look of the fish that goes into your fish stew yesterday, you might have enjoyed the fish meat in the stew hahaha.

Your article brings back fond memories of a great time spent by us foursome on 30 of last month venturing into various nooks and corners around Seoul and outskirts to explore and soak in experiences relating to PSH in the context of MGL. But what? 😳😫😩 It did not occur to me the hairtail /cutlass fish are snake like creatures 🐍 until your education. For one who would turn down dishes with eels … I didn’t realise I was gulping down fish with a more creepy appearance than eels. Oh well 😔, guess there is always a first time 😝😋
@dorothyooi Eel, something else that I won’t touch even though many people rave about Japanese unagi. My childhood visits to the acquarium sealed my fate when I came eye to eye with this huge snake-like creature between a thick glass tank! Eeek! 🐍🐍🐍
