Episode 16 was the most exhilarating episode of KBS drama “My Golden Life” to date! I know I sound like a broken recorder now, as I say the same after every episode. But last night was that good! It was a tale of Oppa and two sisters! Kekeke! 😄
The sister that turned out fake and the sister that became real! And Oppa put up his best performance with a myriad of facial expressions that came right from the heart, the changes could rival those of the four seasons!
Knowing that his real sister is Seo Jisu, Oppa Choi Dokyung wanted to know more about his long lost sister and get to know her better. He already met her a couple of times because of her sister Seo Jian and they hit it off well. Last night saw a deepening of that warm relationship. Oppa and his tongsaeng had lunch together, and shared many a tale about her and sister Jian. But what was important to Choi Dokyung was that he was able to get Jisu to call him Oppa, because he was Oppa to her sister Jian. That made him really happy. And it was evident that Oppa was filled with emotions that emitted from his heart as he reached out in love for his sweet, innocent younger sister.
Then it was Oppa with the sister that turned out fake. The relationship at the beginning of the episode was absolutely chilling. The discovery of the deceit by Mother Seo caused a melt down in the growing warm brother – sister relationship. The agreed truce and hold back of the truth from the Chois did not make a comfortable working relationship between the two. So cold, so formal.
Until…they had to mutually face Grandfather Roh. They had to find an excuse not to be in Yangpyeong to meet with him, fearful that their secret would be uncovered by this shrewd old gentleman. With the idea to damage the circuits of Oppa’s car, the success of their partnership to accomplish the task brought things between Oppa and his sister to a different angle! From sister to…maybe the first stirring of love or some pulling of the emotional heartstrings!
Well, at least on the part of Oppa…as was the cliff hanger for Episode 16. The tale of Oppa and the two sisters. Makes me want to dive right in to Episode 17 immediately! But alas…we have to wait a whole week! Darn!

I don’t need to say any more further than that I am amazed at this great Korean actor Park Si Hoo. Watch for yourself how within 2 different scenes with 2 different sisters he is able to captivate our hearts evoke our deep emotions with his different responses of love! It’s all in those talking eyes of his!
Bellísimo
I have just read Nance’s article because tonight I will be watching episode 16, having just watched episode 15 an hour ago. While all the exciting goodies as tabled out on Nance’s this article about CDK’s interactions with the 2 sisters, which is all so alluring to dive straight into episode 16. However, as my mind is fresh on episode 15 so a couple of things I like to express. Episode 15 has the most significant revelation of Jian how she herself sees herself in this whole mess as she confided everything to her close girlfriend. Just as I thought Jian is a good person with serious sense of responsibility, the way Jian analysed this mess, she blamed it on herself for it to become this stage. This scene again, sealed my understanding of what type of person Jian is deep inside her, that I have no misinterpretation of writer So’s intention of what Jian is made of. The strength in character and her sense of fairness to every one closed to her. She completely skipped the part where her very initial response to her mother was she wasn’t gonna to leave the house and the family who she lived with for 25 years, that fact did not naturally surface in her own reflection at this point in time. The fact that it was her mother’s threat about what the Chois could do to the family that made her completely changed her mind. She didn’t say this at all to her friend. To protect the dignity of her Seo mother. The usual coward or selfish people would harp on that fact to console themselves that it wasn’t her at the very start to have cause this mess. But all she told her girlfriend is yes it is her own doing that as soon as she found out the Chois are rich, she wanted to go, and she wanted to go soon because they are rich. And she blamed herself that why she acted like the world owes her a living then, when she merely lost a job, which now in her words is like it wasn’t a big deal (but back then, any reasonable person could feel her world collapsed on her, that bitch fight wasn’t about just a job, it was how someone within her circle set out on purpose to smash her, wanting to see if she would fall apart, etc that was happening back then). She is giving this perspective as she told her girlfriend so that her Seo mother doesn’t look that bad in the eyes of others. It is her Jian, as she now put in words, that it is her own acting out as if she was owed by this world that led her mother to resort to that mistake. Which in fact, Jian wasn’t acting at all, her mother saw her pitiful state outside the police station sitting inside a taxi, Jian didn’t even know mother saw that. This is what I again, salute the strength of character of Seo Jian. That her degree of shouldering onto herself because of her mind power and her heart are enormous, at an age of 28 (28? is my question, if eldest brother is 33, when Jian was 2 year old, the brother was 8 years old, 6 years difference so Jian is about 27? anyway, never mind, 27 or 28). Still 28 is a young woman. It is an enormous capacity in her heart and bravery to be able to blame herself in this mess, she alone reached such reflection all by herself, not a soul she had the benefit in talking out with, counselled by, none at all. Since the truth surfaced to Jian, she’s been living in the dark age , a completely black out world of her own. Threading on thin ice, under tremendous pressure at work and at Chois’, yet this young lady did not lose sight of all the critical impact of things that are all muddled up. Like her friend said, the friend would have run off, how could she alone face up to Choi still living in that house. Yet her mind is such a crystal clear in maturity and reasoning. As she reflected how could her father tell her the truth after she crushed her father with her viewpoints of why she wanted to go to the Chois. Next she reiterated the point is regardless of whatever she herself said to the father, still, for such a big thing, such an important thing, still, she said, still, father, you should have told me. This alone demonstrates the strength of what ought to be the degree of righteousness a human being ought to be. That degree of righteousness needed a lot of mental strength from the father, which the father lacks. If the father has the mental strength as strong as Jian, he would have straighten out his wife’s and told Jian the truth. No matter what circumstances or reasons, the point is, the Seo father ought to have told Jian the truth there and then. Because that is the thing that will make a world of difference, to Jian, as well as to me this viewer. Writer So is most brilliant to craft it as such, otherwise there is no MGL story.:)
Having poured my mind off on Jian from episode 15, I too closedly watching CDK’s reactions. The CDK’s Choi’s colour and characteristics instantly came out soon after the confession by Jian. When we viewers debated Jian her character as being not pure, not noble, not a well considerate young woman when she chose to join the Chois for her own sake and for money, etc etc. But we have not talked much about the inadequacy of CDK’s character as the role itself. Personally, I see CDK, up to this point, a selfish person with his instinct of exerting his power over people now and then. No doubt he has a seed of kindness inside him, but majority of the times, CDK is not a nice person. The immediate reactions that came to CDK is all his spontaneous true colour. His mannerism of intimadating Jian looks to me as a bully type of person. Just as those glimpses of he exerting his power over General Manager at the garden that “who are you talking with?” on the 1st day Jian went to their house. Not that I do not understand why CDK has to react as such upon hearing the confession, what I want to say is for all the things that Jian did in her capacity and her circumstances, Jian copped it for the so many things and being criticised of not thoughtful enough. Yet, CDK get away everytime his bad traits surfaces and he gets viewers’ understanding that that is because he has his 40 years of base to protect. To me, CDK’s character when compared to Jian has a long way to develop before I can cast my respect vote on CDK as a good human being. For CDK to turn to such aggressive reactions towards Jian upon the confession, the writer must intend to show us CDK’s inadequacy is my take. Otherwise, I expect his initial reaction to be not as intimidating as he was towards Jian. Yes, he softens later but still very intimidating now and then whenever Jian pleaded for his mercy. Having had those brotherly love he invested in Jian just before the confession, I don’t expect CDK to turn that aggressive towards Jian. That means to me those love invested which he only willing to give because of her capacity as his family. He as a person does not naturally has capacity to love a human being just as a human being, up to this point of MGL. The moment he was told she is not his sister, he sternly told her don’t call me your brother. If your heart has truly accepted this human being in front of you as a person you like and respect, when she has done nothing wrong, do you tell her off in such moment of real disaster is my view. As a reasonable human being, I would tend to be trying to protect everyone including this person who is so honest to me. Not immediately drawing the line is what I mean. I expected a more traumatic CDK with more desire to resolve with this lady in front of him who of late is the one he mingles most and has a bonding. As Jian treated him with confidance for her to tell him the real reason why she did that on the day in the directors board meeting, I expected a more don’t know what to do totally tortured CDK as his initial reactions, not one that immediately all his porcupine spikes up who is supposed to be a more resourceful oppa, a more than half a decade older than Jian kind of person’s reactions. As he made it very clear to Jian, the line is drawn between Seo and Choi, it’s all down to how he wants to do things as a Choi with their own rules. Whereas Jian only wanted to do what is least damaging to everyone, admitted to CDK she knows the consequences to her family, which he himself was slightly taken aback when Jian repeated she knows the consequences of her Seo’s parents’s crime. This shows to me CDK underestimates Jian, as he often did when they were enemies, despite the time spent in knowing Jian subsequently, he still underestimates Jian. So I like to express that writer So got to play her card very carefully, regarding the CDK character. Because after writer showed us the good side of CDK in bonding with Jian, suddenly she pulled out the card of CDK back to being his true colour Choi of cold and protective as his instant natural reaction of the confession, is being interpreted that the writer has not yet wanting the character of CDK to be possessed of much admirable humanity.
I don’t find it an unusual reaction from CDK at all. I would react the same way.We are talking about family that CDK grew up all his life vs someone whom he barely knew. No doubt they did spend some time together and got to know one another better. But it has only been a short time span, scratching the surface compared to his whole life. Not only that, no matter how outwardly cold they are, there is still family love within the Choi family so the natural reaction is to protect the family against anyone outside. CDK has been schooled to act in a formal way in everything he does. That is how his family or mainly his mother sees as the proper way. And this is also how he behaves around people, including his circle of friends (maybe one exception being his best friend. But even then, he doesn’t share everything with his best friend). The formality is his “comfort” and “protective” zone. Letting his hair down as he did in a small way with Seo Jian is not his usual way. So when he goes on the defensive, to me, very natural he reverts back to his usual way – cold and formal, drawing of dividing lines. You told me you are not my sister, so please do not call me your brother.
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후 씨 I don’t find it unusual reaction from CDK as the CDK set out to be either. When the writer chose to show us that part of CDK again, it reaffirms some of us (and mine) initial interpretation of CDK’s behaviour towards Jian in her early days in Choi’s house as being a bully and truly there was the intent to intimidate and bully this weaker new comer into his house, despite he openly claimed he will accept her because she is his sister. The scene when I thought I was a bit too harsh to judge CDK having his sadist trait in putting on the necklace on Jian at her most akward moment, as viewers were made to feel the uncomfortable vibes the oppa who as it came to Jian as making fun of her, as well as many scenes here and there, example brushed over Jian when they talked about music with his despise that this pariah knows nothing, the dinner table manner training, all these are not nice. Not nice at all to come from a so called distinguished gentleman. Yet CDK objected that view when Jian pleaded on the day “”please for today just don’t stop making fun of me.” CDK pleaded that wasn’t fair the things he has done so far was deemed as making fun of her, when he himself doesn’t realise how intimidating he had been up to the point of when he finally bent to let his real kindness out towards this struggling sister. And since that real kindness has started to flow, as a viewer I have expectation of the role and character of CDK will also transform to be a better human being, my view expressed today is from the angle that if CDK has compassion in his body, his reaction towards Jian won’t be that harsh. Especially when Jian is honest enough and that the wrong doing did not come about directly as an intentional act from Jian. I am looking out how writer is gonna to make CDK develops is what I am saying. Having shown me the viewer that CDK does have a seed of kindness inside him, having mingled with the sister who lives in his pocket day in day out no matter how short, having seen her character in how she handles her work, how hard she tries, when both having form better understanding of each other, and especially when Jian chose to tell him 1st instead of keeping the secret further, I thought is a good time for the writer to introduce a bit more compassion into CDK’s character. To be back to his original CDK’s colours, that’s why I say it will be a long way before I say I could respect CDK as a good man.
Sorry, but I just don’t see CDK as a “bully”. I see it as the way he has been brought up and how he would normally behave. The Chois have specific principles and orderliness which they adhere to and which everyone in the household understands and which they believe in upholding, whether rightly, wrongly, formally, rigidly or coldly. That is their way of life and that is how they all behave and that is what their employees understood. Eg: CDK’s sister articulated it well – their employees get paid handsomely and they know not to gossip. Mother Choi expected their employees to behave in a proper manner and not abuse their power or misuse company resources – that’s why she wanted to immediately fire the head of marketing for sending SJA on personal errands during company time. At the first instance, when his necklace was revealed, in actual fact, the expectation was that he should wear this for SJA but they both declined as it was awkward. But since then, he had offered the olive branch and probably in his view, he thought it an appropriate time to do what was proper. And with him, things are in black and white – so if you are not my sister, don’t call me brother. If some in your family did something wrong, then they ought to be punished. If you are part of the family, then as family, you are equally responsible. CDK is definitely not perfect. I think the real him isn’t that formal, cold, unfeeling, follow the rules person. However, because he has been groomed to be successor, he has no choice but to do what is expected and proper within the context. His circle of people are the same and they behave the same way so his perception is there is nothing untoward in his behaviour. SJA, coming from another world with a different upbringing and ways of doing things brings out something that is the antithesis of what he is used to. And he needed to adapt. For instance, in Ep 16 ending when they had to short circuit the car, he was helpless on how to do it as he is used to getting a mechanic, he won’t think of getting down on the ground to do it himself but she would. And as she said in Ep 17 – maybe you think a man should know more about cars then a woman…it was a lengthy speech she gave, will let you watch it when it comes. But it certainly showed their differences in perceptions.
I knew i have stirred the bees hornets when i use word like bully kekeke. It is a form of bully the way the Chois go about. Is a form of exerting their power on others using the justification that that’s the way they operate. Jian being ridiculed as not clever enough to pick up table manners by observing Chois at dining table this kind of words coming from CDK is harrassment in my world. Harrassment is defined in my work place that anything we say as making the listener uncomfortable with a view that the person saying those words bear implicit ridicule to the listener. The way CDK said those words at his training to Jian that dinner training is enough to warrant a case of the recipient of those words to file a case of harrassment in the context of harrassment. The other word for harrassment is bully. The one who has the controlling position casting out words of disrespect or looking down at the weaker party is deemed a bully. This is how society like the one i live in where strong human right is often being focus defined bully. Yes it is highly a matter of different perspective whenever such conflict of opinion arises. Nevertheless i have been reminded every year at work place what can constitute as harrassment which does not allow us to hide behind the reason that is how i was brought up or that I was only joking. The gist of whether the recipient of words or action feels there has been intent of degrading. Never mind if the recipient could be over sensitive the harrassment code tells us we have to be very careful in our words and actions. As soon as the recipient party feels uncomfortable he or she has the right to report you as a bully.
