No, don’t get carried away, I know there are lots of good looking barbie dolls in Korea, but we are not talking that. We are talking Korean BBQs 🙂
Like the Aussies, Koreans love their barbies.
The key differences are Aussie barbies are very casual do-it-yourself style, with lightly marinated big chunks of meat and cooked outdoors in the open. As is Aussie tradition, no barbie can be without that big pint of icy cold beer!
In contrast, Korean barbies are mainly indoor activities. Delicate, thin slices of meat, or slightly more chunky ribs are marinated in heavy sauce – some with that extra dash of spice! And there will be fresh, crisp vegetables aplenty that can be eaten on its own with Ssamjang soya bean sauce or as wraps for the chargrilled, full flavoured, hot barbecued Korean beef, pork or chicken. And of course, what is Korean barbie without the social rounds of soju distilled rice liquor?
Park Sihoo-ssi has a favorite Korean barbie in his hometown, Buyeo. Room No 9 in the restaurant has been designated as Park Sihoo-ssi’s room. And I had the pleasure of dining in this very special room on my last trip to Park Sihoo-ssi’s hometown!
Korean barbies seem to be the in-thing when it comes to the celebratory get-together to wrap up the filming of a drama or a movie. Well at least what I have seen of Park Sihoo-ssi’s dramas and movies. Maybe it is the informality of the barbie and that the cooking of the food itself takes a while, giving the cast and crew time to socialise, to re-live fond memories and to solidify friendships.
Remember that big celebration feast after the wrap up of Cheongdamdong Alice when the Korean fans graciously invited Park Sihoo-ssi and the cast and crew to a Korean barbie fiesta? And then in Jeju when Park Sihoo-ssi completed the Jeju leg of the filming for “Love After Love”, the Korean fans did it again with a scrumptious meal of the island’s delicacy – Jeju black pork.
We had the same Jeju black pork barbie at a restaurant just across from the one Park Sihoo-ssi had his. And we can attest that the Koreans sure know how to enjoy their meat! Deliciously grilled over a nice charcoal fire that seals in the succulent goodness of fresh cut meat!
Korean barbies are yummilicious! And it is no wonder Park Sihoo-ssi simply loves his Korean barbies!

“Park Sihoo-ssi must love his Korean barbies!”. But who doesn’t? I like mostly the indoors K. barbies made by the table companions as they prefer, more crispy or more soft, more spicy or not and with many vegetables. And all the culinary fests after shooting a drama, or a movie become an unforgetable event for all the crew members. And to PSH’s greatest peasure that he completed a good job! As I hope to happen with his new drama “NH”.
