The Christmas bug has hit me, hard and fast! I am now in full swing Christmas mood and what the season encompasses! Though I am still busy with work, bring on that magic, please! I need some good cheer!
Today will be the shortest day and longest night of the year. It is winter solstice, the start of winter! And with winter, I’m dreaming…dreaming of a white Christmas, exactly as what Bing Crosby sang so many years ago. But of course, I can only dream because where I live, while it has four seasons, it will never snow, let alone being able to look out of my window and see the city covered in a coat of snow white!
As with tradition, family features big during winter solstice. The Chinese call this day Dongzhi or 冬至 and will gather the family together for a dinner feast, often home cooked. One food that will always be served is glutinous rice dumpling or tangyuan 汤圆, often in a sweet soup, symbolising family reunion.
The Koreans also celebrate this day, called Dongjitnal 동짓날 (Dongji which sounds exactly like how the Chinese would pronounce Dongzhi) by partaking with their families Dongji patjuk 동지팥죽 or red azuki bean porridge with chewy rice cake balls. The white rice cake balls symbolize new beginning, fresh feel, prosperity and a celebration of longer days to come. The Koreans believe that red keeps evil spirits at bay, so the red bean porridge will bring good luck for the new year. If the weather is cold on Dongjitnal, the harvest next year will be bountiful.
So hopefully, it will be a cold day today! We want plenty of good harvest, especially for our Park Sihoo-ssi! That he will have plenty of new dramas and movies next year and an abundance of fan activities. And the most important harvest? Finding romance and love! Kekeke!
Yes, I’m dreaming…not only of a white Christmas but all things good for Park Sihoo-ssi next year! And I am confident I will have the latter come true! Fighting!
Happy Dongjitnal Park Sihoo-ssi and everyone! Keep warm! For it will be a cold day today, for sure!

Happy Winter Solstice to all who celebrate this day! The Korean red bean sweets look so yummy and inviting. I love anything red beans and glutinous rice. Hope our Sihoossi get pampered by his mum’s own made specialties and able to enjoy today with his family.
Maria Quiroga Bustos In China, if it rains on Winter Solstice, next year will be a good year! So we will take it it rained in Asia too…so good for Park Sihoo-ssi Kekeke! Good news soon, we hope! 🙂
In southern hemisphere, I suppose winter solstice falls around 21st to 23rd June, so I will take my rain check to eat the glutinous rice sweets in June hahaha
Like, people give holiday, special meaning! For the future, a good wish, a strong sense of ceremony! At any time, don’t stop chasing dreams, because dreams are sweet! Each person, the seriousness of his own life, not wasting time, give yourself some time and space to calm your mind, for what is the answer, the heart, no regrets, is the most important! Today, winter solstice, Fuzhou, very hot! Everyone said a joke: hundred years warm winter solstice, Fuzhou heatstroke prevention!” Hope to bring friends, happy noon time!
On winter solstice the world might look pretty grim, but as soon as the solstice has passed, the days will start getting longer and we start looking forward to Spring, to the Sun coming. On the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice, people gather to watch the sunrise , as druids, pagans and revellers did thousands years ago, , to celebrate the solstice at Stonhenge, Scotland,, And many of the traditions now, associated with Christmas, had roots in winter slostice celebrations- including Christmas tree,, as the Druids, the priests of the ancient Celts, used evergreen trees , holly and mistletoe as symbols of everlasting life, during winter solstiice rituals. But after the solstice everyone will focus on what is ahead and point toward the future. And as Koreans believe that a cold day on solstice will bring a wealthy harvest next year, so I hope of a prosperous new year for PSH, in his life and career. A year to bring him good dramas to play in, and a happy family, where life begins and love never ends. Enjoy winter solstice with hope , good luck and happines!
I echo what you wish for Park Sihoo-ssi for teh coming year. And wish you and your family best of health and happiness too 🙂
Thank you. Same to you dear Nance.
Om telolet om…
Celebrating Winter Solstice is not a part of Dutch traditions. Minority groups do though and then it’s called Yule. A white Christmas….I can’t remember when we had a white Christmas for the last time. If we have snow at all, it is most of the time after Christmas. But dreaming about a white Christmas never annoys! 🙂 In 2017 will start a new cycle of 9 years again. This first year will bring many new opportunities for PSH which will last for the years to come! 😀
Most fantastic to hear of the new frontier awaiting PSH, Sihoossi, are you ready?
