I like originality and would try to avoid repeating myself as much as I can. But in this case, I just can’t help it, because it is so appropriate! I have to use this almost similar headline I have used previously for today’s article as it is so befitting the Korean news I see that have been creeping up since last week!
Park Sihoo-ssi, he’s big in Japan!
Infinitely so, as he has proven over and over again! His dramas play like a broken video recorder, repeatedly, over and over again over the years…not that the Japanese are tired of his dramas, mind you. In fact, they keep on requesting for more! And the broadcasting stations simply love to telecast them! There must be something magical, endearing and attractive to sustain their fascination for this man and his dramas!
Year in, year out, his dramas get repeated on the major national and regional stations in Japan. From some of his oldest works to his latest. Last year, since his newest drama “Local Hero” or “Unsung Hero” as it is called in Japan, was broadcast, there have been even more intensive showings of his dramas and movies. A revival and huge demand for his works!
And his biggest record and achievement is happening as we write! From April – June 2017, six Japanese broadcasting stations are presenting his dramas almost simultaneously. “The Princess Man”, “Prosecutor Princess”, “Cheongdamdong Alice”, “Unsung Hero” and even “How to be a good neighbour” in which he had but a secondary role! This phenomenon is apparently unprecedented and is a strong testament as to why Park Sihoo-ssi is THE Hallyu star in Japan! He reigns in Japan!
Thank you Alphaville, you said it all for me!

Nance, I know you love all PSH series and films but which one is your most favorite one?
Ah…tough choice on which is my favorite! I can tell you which among those that he is the male lead that is bottom of my list though. I am not so partial to Prosecutor Princess. I find the plot has not much substance, likely because the series was too short and had insufficient time to develop its characters.
If it interests you, please read what I thought of Park Sihoo-ssi’s leading ladies which I wrote in the week of 16 – 21 Jan 2017. Enjoy!
✌
It’s amazing what happens in Japan for Park Si Hoo fame and for his fans. This avalanche of series comes as a preview at the show in June, at Tokyo Dome City Hall. To be a complete collection, I hope one of the televisions to rebroadcast Queen of reversal. His performance as Goo Yong Shik is my favourite.
Yes, it would be great to have QOR and Family Honor being re-broadcasted. This will then be a complete showcase of his major works…plus maybe Iljimae 🌹😊😘💕
Yes, you are absolutely right, how could I forget Family Honor, or Iljimae? How many broadcasting stations are still available in Japan?
You ladies might remember i can’t stop if i start to talk QOR…..
Unprecedented phenomena that’s what happening in Japan in recognition of PSH’s fame and endearing acting talent. TPM will always remain my top favourite but I have difficulty deciding which is second. All the rest of his works are brilliant each from its own dimension. So I conclude for now all the rest have equal second ranking. Perhaps I may change my mind when we get to view his next work – which is still illusive to date.
Haha Chai Hua – please stop before you even start! For if u start it will go into pages again!
Dorothy Ooi, for me too, TPM is Top Excellence (in fact it is, from 2011), but QOR is like a night story for sweet dreams.
Dorothy Ooi HAHAHAHA….If only PSH knows how pathetic I can become by his QOR, he should come up with his next project like the one we heavily guessed little while ago, about romantic comedy with a character who evolved and developed from a smart ass kind of man to a good man. That’s the only medicine PSH can develop to save Chai Hua from resigning to that pathetic self again. TPM is top class as I said, 100% full marks all front, it is absolutely brillliant on all counts. However the emotion when I watching it is like I am alone sunk into a deep ocean in a stormy big wide sea, too difficult to take, I still prefer QOR that made me laughed and teared at the same time. And when the deserving people in QOR finally got what they worked hard for, that’s the kind of jubilation feeling I like to feel, compared to the tortured feeling in TPM of being torn by his love for the woman at the same time must also need to revenge on her father.
The older of my 2 younger brothers has just finished viewing QoR and gave his thumbs up. But like me he still prefers TPM for its overall richness on the dramatic front. Mind you he is certainly not a fan of any particular K Stars and impartial to whatever K dramas that may come along as it is simply for him and his wife to pass time in the evening during his current empty nest experience ( all children residing outside the country ). But since watching TPM he has specifically requested for DVDS of PSH’s dramas, conceding that he is one brilliant actor while he finds other K Dramas not worth the watch! I have just handed to him CDDA and next in line would be PN and NH. After that I will be running out of his dramas to share with my brother! Oh Sihoo-ssi please get into a new drama soon! I
plead! 🙃
Dorothy Ooi Sooo good to hear of the thumbs up QOR from your wise and mature and intellectual brother ! I completely understand TPM is the top ranking number 1 for many viewers, PSH or Non PSH fans. TPM is an absolute classic that is not easily matched in standard and quality, perhaps only PSH can outperform TPM, PSH’s next periodic drama could take its ranking 🙂 In my PSH fans recruitment attempts, I usually recommend TPM for people who have yet to know or seen PSH. As I know TPM is flawless and as you said so rich and PSH demonstrated wide range of acting skills that will straight away blow off any one’s presumption that he is just another ” siew sian rou “” (pretty boy K actor). I only start to mention QOR to others when I know these people better, people who are a bit more willing to watch with open mind and don’t easily give up the front few rather mundane episodes.
“Big in Japan!” PSH is Big not only in Japan. But, if we think about his dramas being broadcast year by year in Japan, then we must accept that “PSH is Big in Japan.” And K. entertainment must be proud of this accomplishment of one K. actor. Why he is so appreciated in Japan? Because PSH is so convincing in his roles , that he can hold his audience captive, making them feel as if there is nothing , but the story at hand. Because PSH has a keen insight into human behaviour , and can convey emotions, and develope more convincing attributes to his characters. Because PSH has a natural talent for performing, being able to successfully bring his characters to life. “Big in Japan.?” Yes, because Japanese audience have recognized a great actor:” A good actor is somebody who can be truthful and fascinating, and interesting and enlightening.”{Bruce Davidson]
I have a theory why PSH is so appreciated in Japan. From my personal observation the Japanese place a lot of importance on art, beauty, class, quality at their refined best. You see it in the way they prepare their cuisines, the way they package their goods; the eye for details in their fashion ware, etc. They therefore generally have discerning good taste. So when they discover PSH and got a taste of the whole package of classy good looks, bundle of amazing talents and skill sets, combined with a wholesome persona all embodied into this wonderful being, is it surprising they will continue to love him and won’t leave, won’t let go. In one sense our little band of sisterhood here has the same discerning good taste as his Japanese fans. When we have discovered a gem and travelled alongside the best of the best, should we even want to settle for second best?
Very well said Dorothy. Your personal observations about Japanese refined taste in art, beauty, quality, class is right. And reading an article about Japanese people , I’ve come across this remark too:”The Japanese reveal a development of aesthetic taste in which no other nation has reached. … Indeed, the more one knows of the details of artistic taste, the more does he appreciates it”. Yes, the more Japanese audience knows more of PSH’s artistic talent, the more he is appreciated by them. That’s why “PSH is Big in Japan.”
Oh thanks Stefania. Happy and relieved that my personal observation is not too far off from the remark on Japan which you have quoted!
I think close fans like us understood in PSH’s journey to regain his position, and luck is still bit thin, as we all witness all the uncontrollable political events that deeply affected PSH, and we know that in order to maintain fans’ interest and sustain this rough time, PSH offered things that are very special as I said Miyazaki is the norm, his birthday party he gave so much of himself away, why?? Because he hasn’t had luck in coming out with a project that will propel him and gain standing with widespread fans, hence he got to add fuel into his birthday event to propel his momentum. The fact is, at this comeback time, he needs every support every fan could give him. Therefore, one to one photo, why? Because he wished that his fans party turnout will be spectacular, his draw card. Here we have fans who could arrive on 04.04.2017 pardon me to be too presumptive why not 02.04.2017 after all 02.04.2017 was a Sunday, not a working day. Pardon me also to say my very skeptical view about long distance international travel hence not able to arrive Buyeo on 02.04.2017 but 04.04.2017. I am one international fan who put aside 7 days of my life to just travel to Miyazaki to give PSH my support. There is no direct flight from my city to Miyazaki, I paid expensive airport hotel overnight in transit airport, then no flight out after event and stuck in Miyazaki, while my heart was flown back to my sick and dying dog. So coming from me this international fan who had actually flown long distance and not a case of when I go home to Asian family and fly out from Asia to meet PSH, and being a farmer’s wife of nearly 20 years, I know being farmers our lives is not what people thought boring so constant disruption by uninvited guests visit is a tonic for we bored farmers. I often tell many people, of course Barossa welcomes you to visit, but don’t expect me to entertain you when you come unplanned and uninvited. I am sure the Buyeo locals love any tourist to go visit Buyeo after all it is a beautiful country, but that is Buyeo welcomes you, don’t go knock on Papa Park and Grandma’s door when there was no invitation, because you think you are that important that you had travelled long distance.
Many thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have always used the Japanese fans as my role model because they know how fans should behave – though unfortunately, due to bad behaviour of other fans, they have deteriorated in some aspects. But still they are great supporters and lead the way, to the extent that I see some Chinese fans becoming better and exemplary fans, though they still have a very long way to go. Look at the efforts the Chinese fans put in – for charity causes in Park Sihoo-ssi’s name. These are no mean tasks because not only do they contribute money, they also have to do all the hard labour to implement them. To me, international fans, given their international exposure, especially those who come from the developed, western world, should be even more circumspect when it comes to respect, common courtesy, copyright, privacy etc. The actions and attitudes of people are true reflections of their upbringing and it certainly takes all kinds to make the world. And more importantly, what they do say a lot about them, much more than what they say to others about themselves. Respect has to be earned, it doesn’t come easy.
Very good observation Dorothy Ooi. I too completely agree with your view. Like Stefania Lupu said :”The Japanese reveal a development of aesthetic taste in which no other nation has reached..” If any trending of newly developed taste and style of fashion or technology, Japan is the Look East place to focus. I remember many of the HK friends like to go Japan for lots of shopping, and usually talking exceptionally excited about their Japan goodies. All because of their pioneering of coming up with new and finesse type of ideas and discovery. Japanese know themselves and do not need to follow another nation in their liking of entertainment and food. PSH is lucky to have his Japanese fans who are good supportive fans, who are well mannered, respectful for the other people and considerate as well as very orderly in a crowd, such are the advantages for a super star to feel comfortable to ïnteract. Yesterday I shook my head upon learning more inconsiderate fans invited themselves to PSH’s ancestral home and openly upload photos of PSH’s boat house photos to her blog, when the paying fans at the official event were told “no photo of the house please.” Here these fans who were able to be at Buyeo on 04.04.2017 but dodged the paying for the event to support PSH, in my mean and wicked words, these are “free lunch seekers fans” . I made this comment on this fan’s instagram where she proudly featured her video and photos at PSH family home, taken on 04.04.2017, when I can see Papa Park and Grandma both in working clothes just like my farmer husband that says “very busy with chores”, this was my comment “” Poor Park Family. Thought dressed up and entertained the many fans’s photos demand was done with 2nd April official event proper. 04.04 slipped into work gear to get on with the farm chores backlog…..alas….more fans’ photo demand…hmmm…”” Guess what Ladies? My this wicked comment was deleted. And I consult my psychological expert advice, why such an observation expressed by me being a farmer’s wife who knows farm country people’s life is full on and busy, who says living in the country they are bored and nothing to look forward so any fan can just invite themselves to throng their grounds at fans’ own fancy, because these fans deem themselves to be so important and assume country people’s boredom need their uninvited gate crashing? The poor family, are they in a position to ever say no to any fan who just rocked up in front of their door? I ponder on why my comment get deleted from a psychological viewpoint. Guilty as charged is my verdict.
Absolutely Respect has to be earned. And intelligent PSH and his team know substance over form. If your fanship support is not driven with genuine support don’t go mislead the less informed fans with your personal wish for attention seeking.
