Human behaviour can be most intriguing and unpredictable. A strong, unyielding person might suddenly fold under a single trigger – his or her weakest point!
In TV Chosun’s drama “Babel 바벨” Park Sihoo-ssi’s Cha Woohyuk had a tough adversary in Mrs Tae, the power hungry and evil wife of the Chairman of Geosan Group. This was the woman who killed his father and set a killer after him and the woman he loves.
Not only that, in her desire for power, she plotted to make her son puppet successor to the chaebol empire, continuing to maintain her omni presence. That goal drove her every action and she will not let anything get in her way.
She finally got due justice for all of her evil deeds. Her goal was derailed.
You would think being in prison would make her sorry for all that she had sinned and that she would mend her ways . But no, she spent her time in her prison cell plotting how to mett out even more cruel punishments for those whom she considered her enemies, particularly Cha Woohyuk and Han Jungwon!
He finally found the way to break her and drive her crazy! By hitting her at her weakest point – her driving desire! Nothing mattered to her than the power of Geosan.
And the trigger that hit home and drove her crazy was that she could have what she desired if she had patiently waited and not lift a finger to do all those evil deeds! Her husband had seen through the character of his beloved son and heir and was changing his will to make her son successor!
This was a big blow to a hard, unrepentant woman. Nothing drove her crazy except that the thought that her utmost desire would have been within reach. But hell! Now she had to sit and rot in prison!

Great entertainment value watching the wicked Mrs Tae crumbled at her own undoing… and the total calmness with which Cha Woohyuk delivered the final blow to the murderer of his father. By the power of his words only, not having to lift a single finger.
This “driving Mrs Tae crazy” scene found me applauding in my heart and I gave out a whoopee whoop sound when Cha Woohyuk, in the calmest of disposition, relying on the power of his words only, without having to lift a single finger, delivered that final blow to that most unrepentant, most unyielding personification of evil in their final encounter by revealing Chairman Tae’s final choice for his successor was Tae Suho after all. Imagine all her murderous crimes were totally unnecessary, gone to waste and now she has to pay for it dearly … with her life or live imprisonment!?
Indisputably an important compelling scene to wrap up BABEL – to give the much needed vindication to Cha Woohyuk over the crimes committed to his father 30 years ago; also a rich lesson for those who deviously plot and scheme at all cost for greed of wealth and power when we remember the saying “it is man who proposes but it is God who disposes….”
To be very honest, I don’t really get why Babel chose to focus Mrs Tae on plotting out her thoughts how to win her mind game over CWH and HJW even when she is imprisoned, for the sake of creating the sensation of the ending of the drama. Just because Mrs Tae and CWH are the two with significant impact roles of the magnificent Seven. CWH and HJW are not the people who have caused her to lose her big plan to win Geosan. Her children did. In her perspective, CWH and HJW are just small potatoes in her scheme of things, even when she is defeated in prison, they were still just nothing to her. Unless Mrs Tae had more to reveal her past with CWH’s father that has not been told to viewers, that last scene between CWH and Mrs Tae lacks a sense of importance in the scheme of things, is how it comes across to me, especially that’s the last of Mrs Tae’s scene. I much like it that it is Suho who went see his mother in prison, and that CWH has told Suho about Chairman Tae intended to leave Geosan to Suho. To me, it makes more sense to see how Mrs Tae react in prison when Suho goes see her and tell her that blow. There is more irony to feel her ache when that last scene is Suho revealing to her is my opinion. I know viewers like to see how she gets rebuffed by CWH because everytime they meet she has something nasty to say to him, and it gives viewers the triumphant sense that CWH’s has his last laugh, so to speak. To me, it ought to be the son who should deliver the blow, because at the same time, I want to see Mrs Tae’s words to Suho, after he plotted against her and she killed his wife. There are far more deeper thoughts about these in her, put me in her shoes, I would be thinking and reflecting about these that just happened with my children, who cares what happened to CWH and HJW in those moments?, Compared to her sinister words of plotting how to further torture the lovers (CWH & HJW), to this insignificant son of an insignificant lusted lover she once killed 30 years ago, as she said to CWH when she 1st told him, humans ‘ minds and emotions are not explainable, she still doesn’t know how she came to kill his father in that moment. That already settled the score between her and CWH, there’s no further things she could offer. And if CWH wanted to take action on her killing of his father, Mrs Tae is saying bring that on, you have no proof other than my words, the knife is gone. But the topple over by her own children, is a score she needed to think and going through the emotion which should yield some new and raw emotions meaning more priority emotions to be revealed to the curiosity of viewers like me who don’t buy much of drama impact, instead needed to be convinced from human psychology perspective.
There is not all about only Geosan Group. For a woman like Mrs. Tae, a self-centered woman who wanted everything, the fact that CWH’s father gave up on her in favor of his family was a heavy defeat that pushed her to passionate murder. CWH came to her with a strong love for HJW, emphasizing Mrs Tae’s frustration in the world of love. So, the hatred for CWH, who was her lover’s son, became obsessive. I think it is important Mrs T’s final confrontation with CWH, especially since the truth about the will was revealed.
Meeting her son? Perhaps it would have been important, with the condition that TSH wanted to see her. My point is that between them all things have been said. Mrs. T knows how hard she has hit her son and she can not be forgiven, and TSH has every reason to hate her and never want to see her again. But worse for his mother, I believe that after all the humiliations and all the soul sufferings he has lived since childhood, for TSH, his mother simply does not exist anymore.
I think TSH has reached indifferent feeling when it comes to love or hate. You do have a good point that Mrs Tae defeat in love was the reason she went the other extreme, as that’s about the only hint Babel given me what drove her to be as such. I fully understand your point of CWH being more crucial (to your view) to meet her as the final blow. But just as you said despite the logic of no ally with the PA, yet that scene after CWH’s rescued HJW they did not quickly go to seek treatment is something you didn’t feel correct, to me, despite your beautifully pointing out the poignant punch of Mrs Tae and CWH in prison scene as more meaningful, it just doesn’t sit with me. I am not one who watches drama for beautiful and artistic take, the love and romantic scenes of reunion or kissing or passionate of our lead lovers, I usually relaxed my thinking mind from watching the screen and not looking at those much, unless there is important words being said 🙂 Simply put, I am a realist, not a romantics
Chai Hua Loke You do not have to be only realistic when you see an artwork, like a drama, you must open your soul to the romantic side to feel the message as a whole. Because the director has an artistic vision (otherwise the drama would be just a news in the evening or night journal). He works with means of expressing emotions, with close-ups and suggestive images that deserve the effort to see and appreciate all of them. ❤️😊
Daniela Maria Miricescu Chai Hua Loke Mrs Tae is vindictive woman who will bear a grudge forever in her heart and find a way to seek revenge for any big or small deed against her. CWH’s father decided to choose his family over her, so she killed him. She hated CWH because his father chose him over her, she said it somewhere, I can’t remember where, to that effect. CHW also got in her way to her gaining power in Geosan, her ultimate desire. He caused her son to commit suicide and for his handicap, almost derailing her plans. CWH also dared to threaten her with exposing his son’s drug habit among other things. He also kicked her out of the hospital room from visiting her son, which made her livid. Likewise, HJW dared to become pregnant and used the child and the will to stand in the way of her desire. Like most people, when nothing goes well, it is never one’s fault, one normally blames someone else, just that one or two persons for all of our ills. In this case, CWH and HJW were the unlucky ones. I thought this prison scene most powerful. A culmination of their battle and a fruition of CWH’s revenge, something he had worked all his life for but sacrificed for love. The story centred on CWH’s revenge, all his life, to just cut it because of love, to me, it is not entirely realistic, too saintly…so it started off with revenge, it has to end with revenge
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후-씨 朴施厚君 You have pointed very well, as always, all the Ms.Tae’s reasons to hate the prosecutor CWH. And the fact that CWH is the son on her lover was the cherry on the cake. All dialogues between CWH and Ms. Tae were memorable, charged with powerful tension. In particular, in terms of love, two replies from Ms. Tae I liked: “If your father had half your spirit, my life would have been different.” and: “Love? Do revenge instead. I will be alwais here.”
Daniela Maria Miricescu It’s a question of whether the drama has sufficient ingredients and enough convincing psychology to open my soul. Otherwise it can be in danger of similar to me watching news. When I am watching murder mystery drama, the level of curiosity of all human’s tendency and behaviour, especially, needed to be water tight and sits right inside my common sense. As to artistic and romantic stuff, that is to each his/her own enjoyment. In our choice of what to do with the time on our hand, all these romantic beautiful artistic representations are not the cup of tea I am seeking. I am seeking mental stimulation for thoughts process, murder mysteries are my favourites. This the reason I am constantly barking out loud on this forum. Otherwise I would have just enjoyed the beautiful artistic scenes and you would not hear one word from me. 🙂
Chai Hua Loke All your comments are logical and have substance, but sometimes your points of view are different from mine (the reciprocal is valid 😊) and this can benefit the subject under discussion, for a better understanding of it.
In a murder mysteries too, the mental stimulation could be activated not only the naration of facts, not only by dialogues, but through the power of images suggestion also. It’s that the romantic side I refered about. Not at the romances ❤️, although this also contributes to the seasoning of the final product. 😉
Daniela Maria Miricescu 👍👍👍👏👏👏😘😘😘
Daniela Maria Miricescu Chai Hua Loke Stefania Lupu Dorothy Ooi Like you said, all of us have our own views and we make sense even though we may see things differently and focus on different aspects of the drama. This is what makes things interesting because we can see things from other perspectives, not just our own. Great that we have this sharing of differents views. I got a much deeper experience with Babel because of these views.
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후-씨 朴施厚君that this group got into such active sharing of views almost a week after the end of the broadcast of BABEL
is testament of the thought provoking power of the finale of this drama. Wonder are we the only chat group active at this? Any alternate vibes and views from other groups? 🤔🤔
Thanks Nance for accounting these details, they were all vivid and clear in my mind when I made my comment. And you hit the exact reason why Babel had to do it this way, the story is about CWH’s revenge til almost sacrifice love hence that last scene between him and Mrs Tae looks logical. What I am saying is this is still just a drama because of the very reason as just said, it’s about revenge hence got to be CWH’s and Mrs Tae. I did say that that scene gave the most powerful impact for ending. What I am saying is despite such obvious reasons, I didn’t reach my satisfaction similar to all the earlier episodes of how Babel engaged in the most cleverly chosen skillfully crafted reasons of human behaviours each slotted in at precise timing of how in real life humans tendency would be. The same with the Chairman Tae and CWH’s change of will scene, very powerful to give the impact, but doesn’t sit right when I go deep into what would be and would not be of priority sense in the scheme of events and timing. Mrs Tae did build up her dislike til hatred against CWH hence the last scene can be explained on that basis. But put me in reality, my feeling is still towards the more significant new and raw emotions towards her children that is of more curious to me this viewer. If this happens in reality, people would all be curious how did the mother’s and children react in the aftermath, no one wil ask how did it go between a prosecutor and the criminal monster woman in jail. It is just a drama after all, and a drama which has not forgotten the main basis is the prosecutor seeking revenge. I am sure everyone in production and script etc debated over the many options of scenes and developments. I am just voicing out how I suddenly got the deflated satisfaction unlike how all the earlier episodes fully convinced me, I was just expressing how deeply inside my gut feel. Nothing important. What I want to further point out is the script almost in danger of reducing the significance of CWH’s role, by not giving more scenes and more twists in his parents’ background how that is linked to Tae. Just like why his mother’s suicide is not given any more scene. The heights of all my adrenaline and sensation throughout the drama had all come from the many twists of story of the Tae’s family members. That part of emphasis had almost overtaken all the interest in me to watch Babel. The script ought to focus and create a bit more of twists to highly curious viewers like myself just about CWH’s family and background.
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후-씨 朴施厚君 I am 💯 % with you on this revenge and prison cell bit. Revenge is the paramount motivation driving the plans and plots of CWH, the lead character in BABEL, and so it must be revenge that takes centre stage again in the finale of the drama, effectively played out in the scene where evil murderous Mrs TAe was given the shocking revelation by none other than CWH, her arch enemy and archilles heel.
Dorothy Ooi Some time ago, one of the visitors to this blog expresses the objection that there is too much talk here, and Nance replied that we are a more special group of fans (I do not remember exactly, but I think this was the meaning).
So I think we are a rarity.😊 And that’s because the time (they are already a few years) confirmed that we have in comun the admiration for a great actor and his work, but also the pleasure of communicating between us on the same wavelengths.
Daniela Maria Miricescu Oh yes, we are a special group of fans for sure! We are opinionated, we see things from different and deeper perspectives and we like to share our views while respecting that of others. We have diversity because we come from different parts of the world, with different upbringing and culture and all these make us special 😂😂😂
Daniela Maria Miricescu prosperous fat cat with hues of rainbow coloured 🌈 top and tail!! Are these 2-pronged depictions – for the top, motions in vibrant colours of PSH and all his dramatic works, and for the tail, the forever wagging approval of those works by his colourful bunch of international fans?
Dorothy Ooi Nice interpretation Dorothy! ❤️ But me, I thought to show only my pride that I belong to this special group, through the fluffy (not fat 😅) Pusheen, a “special” kitty that looks like a fantastic rainbow unicorn.
Daniela Maria Miricescu haha wasnt your earlier mention of fluffy with reference to HJW or the actress herself!? 😊
Although I don’t have the English version of epis. 16, yet, reading all your comments about Mrs Tae coincide with my repugnance for her too. An unfaithful wife, a not loving mother for her children , but a selfish one, a criminal mind , manipulating , exploiting , violating the rights of others, she has a personality disorder. She never thought of the consequences of her crimes or concern for being caught for her crimes. Her only concern was to take care of her at the expense of others, not caring who is hurt. Her definite desire was to take the lead of the company, not her son, whom she wants as the puppet president. How much of a priority was he to her?. NONE. There is a saying :”The dead don’t need revange”, but CWH’s goal for 30 years was to revange his parents’ death. Has he felt satisfied or healed of his revange after Mrs. Tae was put in jail? Has he experienced relief from the hate and bitterness that had been burning inside him for so many years? I hope he has. As for me, I feel really satisfied to see her in jail , and the confrontation with CWH, while in prison, driving her crazy, this is her real punishment. “Criminals do not die by the hands of the law. They die by the hands of other men”[G.B .Shaw] And for Mrs Tae the most painful penalty has come from her own children.
Dorothy Ooi Oh, that! She is another kind of fluffy, more sophisticated and sexy. The fluffy cats family is large. We are some funny and wise fluffy cats. 😄
Daniela Maria Miricescu oh i do love all cats! Fat or fluffy or sophiscated type aristrocats, they all move really sexy called the cat walk!
