I had a visitor from home the other day, someone whom I have known for a long time. He had time in between his business trip to catch up for dinner. It has been a while since I have been home so it was good to meet and talk about old times and about his family.
He shared his wife’s latest craze – for Korean dramas. He has never understood why people were so into them. And his rather westernised wife surprised him by suddenly developing this very Asian passion.
They say “curiosity killed the cat”. Always the nosey guy, he decided to sit down with his wife to watch an episode to figure out why. Just before he left for his business trip, his wife and him were watching one that got him really hooked. Now, he is a convert, and will be watching with his wife whenever he could.
He told me why.
What fascinated him the first time he watched this Korean drama was a guy in army uniform at the mercy of his army corporal. The corporal was having a whale of a time grilling and torturing a new recruit and putting him through his paces. “Stand at attention! Don’t slouch!” “Drop down, do a hundred push-ups.” “Why so tired? Go run the field 50 times!” And most funny, “Clench your fists. Put them in front of your eyes. What do you see? ” “Nothing?!!”
These hilarious scenes reminded my friend of his own army days! So it was funny for him to see them being enacted on TV.
That poor army boy was who got him hooked on that drama. He continued to watch, thoroughly entertained and fascinated by this young chap who was also the boss’ son. So fascinated by his many funny expressions and gestures. The antics between this guy and his secretary were belly funny. And him and the old guy arguing over whose toothbrush? So darn hilarious!
My friend continued to rave about this drama and the actor he really enjoyed watching …
Wait a minute! Hold your horses…those scenes, they sounded really familiar!
“Are you taking about the Queen of Reversal?” “Not sure?”
“Was it about an older married woman and a younger man? Woman with big eyes, big glasses, sixties type hairstyle, like aunty like that?”
“Yes, yes, yes!”
“Ah, Queen of Reversal! ” “You like the young chap?”
“Yes, his acting not bad and very funny.”
“Oh, oh,..my favorite Korean actor! Park Sihoo. Love this guy. He is really a great actor and so gorgeous looking. I love his smile! You should catch his other dramas. He is so good! He has this movie too. Men will like this thriller. Confession of Murder. Cannot say too much about the plot or will let the cat out of the bag. Must watch it yourself. Tell your wife she must watch Park Sihoo-ssi’s other dramas. He is brilliant! She must catch Family Honor, and Prosecutor Princess and …”
So you can imagine…my poor friend probably had his earful of my ravings about Park Sihoo-ssi all evening! The good is, all my ravings did the trick or should I say, Park Sihoo-ssi did it all by himself.
Park Sihoo-ssi, you did great in “Queen of Reversal”. You so fascinated my friend, bowled him over and turned him into a big fan!
