In KBS drama “My Golden Life”, since Seo Jian found inconsistency in timing when she sustained an injury to her right toe which resulted in a scar and when Choi Eunseok went missing, she had been feeling uneasy. Doubts washed over her as to whether she was really the missing Choi daughter and she wanted to get to the truth of the matter.
In between working on Haesung Group’s 40th anniversary project, she also tried to uncover the truth through different means. A check with Housekeeper Min confirmed that investigations and DNA had been done to determine her identity. Asking Oppa Choi Dokyung whether he remembered his childhood and her when she was young did not reveal anything as mentions of Choi Eunseok was taboo in their house after her disappearance. The opportunity to go through an old photo album of the Seo family found missing childhood photos.
Picking on the memories of her brother Seo Jitae finally gave her a slim lead when he recalled that he thought Seo Jisu looked different during the time their father was in Dubai. Flashbacks of her conversations with Mother and Father Seo made her even more suspicious of the truth. When she dug deeper by researching on the internet on news of the missing Choi Eunseok, she found an old photo of the missing girl in an old newspaper clipping.
Rummaging through her Seo parents’ belongings, she finally found a hidden child photo of Seo Jisu and her passport that she could compare with the photo in the news clipping. That was when the truth finally hit home! Seo Jisu was the child who died. Seo Jisu is Choi Eunseok! She is the real daughter of the Chois!
What will happen next? Again, we are left with a cliff hanger in Episode 12…one we have to wait till next weekend to know the outcome! Will Seo Jian confront her real parents? Will she reveal the truth? What will happen to her relationship with the Chois and in particular, her budding relationship with her oppa Choi Dokyung? We can only guess Writer So’s thoughts. But one thing for sure. With the truth hitting home, there will be heartbreak!
On the one hand while I anxiously await to watch more of the “secret birth” and its impact in “My Golden Life”, I also dread watching Episode 13 as I hate tears and sadness! My feelings are so mixed! Aarghhh!

Time has come for Jian’s mother to justify her lie. Telling lies ,as she said, to protect and help her beloved daughter for a better life, only destroy Jian in the end. Justifying her lie about Jian’s real identity , can be taken as a painful betrayal of a mother for her daughter. How disappointed must be Jian, finding out her mother’s lie, that will chage her life into a bad nightnmare, that will destroy her relationships with the others, even with her own mother, I presume.Because the only true foundation of a relationship can be built on the trust of each other. And now when her good relations with DoKyung have already started, telling him the truth about her identity will destroy his trust in her. Will Jian have the power and determination to uncover her identity to the Choi family? I hope so , because she must think that hiding her identity , without no excuse, will provoke the most awful confusion for the Choi family, than her painful truth.”There is beauty in truth , even if it’s painful.”[J.Harris]
Truth will always tell and a lie can haunt you forever. That is the situation which Seo Jian’s mother is facing now. She alienated her husband and now that her daughter has found out, her daughter might also be upset with her too. Because of her action and she bit into more than she can chew, her daughter now has to face the consequence of a lose-lose situation as the lie has snowballed out of control.
It never pays to lie and to cover a lie with more lies will just cause the liar to spiral down the path of destruction. We see the consequences and dilemma of this destructive decision by Mama Seo unfolding before our eyes in MGL… it will be uneasy to watch, these sad explosive episodes but watch we must – otherwise how will we be able to see good overcoming evil — for MGL shall have a golden ending. Btw aren’t we glad it’s 50 episodes or more. If it’s just 16, we would be down to the last 4 episodes. Whew! At least 3.5 months more of glorious golden weekend entertainment…
Ji An’s story has reached such a point that anybody can trigger a big scandal and cause a change in the worst of things, that seem to be sitting in a calm way for this moment. Questions by Ji An to manager Min and his brother Ji Tae may raise suspicions for them, and could make them to act. Woo Hyuk began to search more and more insistently on Ji An. Ji Soo also has perplexities, and Seo parents are so tense and burdened with secrets, that they can give up anytime, especially dad Seo. Ji An is heading for the certainty that she is not Eun Seok and has more and more evidences.
I wish for Ji An to have the courage and confidence in her “brother” Do Kyung and tell him the truth. Do Kyung will be frightening, but fair in judging things, and only him will find a solution for that his family not suffer and the company’s image not be affected. A temporary solution would be for Ji An to remain Eun Seok, and the secret be preserved in front of the Choi family. But I’m afraid this terrible secret will not be covered for too long, and it will be revealed with all the cruelty (I do not know whom, because there are more and more people who know the truth and have interests in revealing it) to … the 40th anniversary of the company.
In all this storm that is about to begin, the two “brothers” will begin to develop different feelings toward each other. For Do Kyung: anger, shaking of confidence in Ji An’s sincerity. Humility, helplessness, soul crushed for Ji An. But … the Phoenix bird from its own ash reborn. The good feelings and confidence that they have built between them so far, the same as the desire of both of them to find the whole truth, will help the relationship between they to survive in the difficult times that will come. A, and one more thing: mum Choi, when she finds out the truth, will be even more upset, because Ji An has proven she has business skills, just like her.
Very thought provoking comments you’ve got there Daniela. If Writer So gets to read them it may cause her to rethink and twig a bit what she has originally planned for some of the future episodes. Aspects where I am definitely on the same side as you is (1) Jian’s salvation lies in her ‘brother’ Dokyung. This awakened lion will be ferocious when he knows there is betrayal of his trust – but he is principled enough to be fair and just.(2) Jian will remain as Eun Seok for a while more with much agonising and (3) Mummy Choi will be in despair that this smart capable Jian is not Eun Seok. That its sweet but naive Ji Su instead. I await the unfolding of these future episodes with much foreboding and trepidation
Dana , these should be good choises for Jian to reveal the truth about her identity. Do Kyung, having confidence in her abilities and being also indebted to her, as she didn’t tell his mother about the car accident, I hope, he should undersrtand her and help her. And this as soon as possible , because on the 40th anniversary of the company the Chois want to announce her come back in the midst of the family. Otherwise everything will be a disaster for Jian. Poor Jian. I’m waiting epis, 13 and 14 to watch the course of the events.
My take on this is that the teller tale is the aunt who has everything to gain by getting rid of her elder sister and her family. So a sensational news like a big lie will be to her advantage. The most angry will be Mother Choi as she was the one who lost and found the daughter and it showed her incompetence for not checking thoroughly. The one who will make things work will be CDK’s grandfather. He is the storyteller and he also likes SJA who left him a good first impression. The revealing of the truth will make way for the romance between CDK and SJA…otherwise it will be a sibling relationship. Mother Choi will evenTu ally accept SJA as daughter-in-law instead of daughter and she ends up with 3 daughters eventuall. Good framework already crafted by Scriptwriter So, I believe.
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후 씨 that’s why the ending will be a golden one – but there will be much heart wrenching pain and agony to reach that final point …
The delay of a week of my pace to watch MGL to fully utilise what my subscription of KBW World means I will always be out of flavour by the time I am ready to chat about the latest that I have just caught up late into my this 00.10 hour Monday morning. So I shan’t go into talking on the most talked about subject how Jian would do next having uncovered the disastrous lie. Jian as Jian, from the very 1st episode, the strength of her character and how she handles important life decisions and actions, so far nothing that I could fault of. I stand by Jian, and have full faith that he next action and decision, be it soon or later, will continue to demonstrate Jian’s personality of wanting to do her best at the same time as fair as she can to all those around her. Instead as all of you have raved on and on, I absolute salute the pace of the script, every ingredient and timing and deliveries, are all tightly nicely knitted in to give as much flavour and clues of why each role is doing or revealing sign of thoughts or behaviour of each role. Example the youngest Choi sister suddenly came down breakfast with her heavy makeup, this is the tell tale sign of this sister who on the outside is full compliance to family rules and behaviour, but inside her, there is a volcano about to erupt (the Cinderella pole dancer, the heart beating when standing next to her driver – all these that this poor girl suddenly experiencing but no where to release, so on that morning she deviates from the norm to put on heavy make up, only to be told off by Mother Choi. One more view I liked to share is the thing that most impressed me or rather the wisdom that I learnt from episode 12 came from Seo Father. Til episode 12, many life wisdom or philosophy have been said here and then, but the most impressive (to me) has to be the lecture Seo Father gave to his eldest son regarding his reasoning for not wanting to commit into marriage.: To think being the elder you are mature is wrong, to think you know what is right what is wrong is wrong. Even me (Seo Father) I am more than 60 years old, yet I wouldn’t know if I am right or wrong as I go about living my days making my decisions, thinking over what I ought to or ought not to do. “Living is to experience emotions with people. Living is about with people. That’s the thing that makes us human.” I salute scriptwriter putting this wisdom in such profound words. It’s the best words I learnt in a long long while.
Yes, Chai Hua, Seo Father ‘s lecture to his son about the importance of getting married is a lecture for all of us. Because families are made in the heart, because happiness is having a large, loving , caring, close-knit family.
Stefania Lupu ahhh I just lost my reply which was written half way….I shall see if that half written reply will resurface then I continue to edit it
Stefania Lupu Ok reconstruct what I was writing half way and lost. I wanted to say that it wasn’t about the importance of getting married that I was referring to regarding the profound wisdom of Father Seo. I meant to express that it is the thing about oneself should not deny himself/herself from experiencing simply because the person thinks he is old enough to be mature enough hence what he thinks/believes must be right. Living is to take the plunge, even when he has lived more than 60 years, worked in different countries, made important business decisions, he too is in exact state of seeking out everyday, he too does not have the privy to say what is absolute right what is absolute wrong. To Live is To Experience, that is the main gyst that I am most refreshed. Although he ended by saying Living is to be with People, Living is to experience emotion with people, that’s the thing that makes us human, therefore not getting married because the son thinks being poor is not good to get married, is not the way to live out a life. I am not a person who places importance on being married. I am the type who places importance of taking the plunge, whatever and whenever opportunities come your way. In the case of the son, the opportunity that lie in front of him is taking the plunge to be with the one he so loved and each mutually making each other happy. But the son is blinded by his thoughts that he is mature enough to make his choice which he thinks he would not regret , however everyone can see, it is going against his heart.
Chai Hua, there is a saying in our language:”Don’t sell the old persons, better buy them>” So, we better buy them for their wisdom, as of Father Seo ‘s. He says that :to Live is to Experience, to Live is to be with other People , to experice emotions with other people, not to withdraw in seclusion. Because for him social isolation is one of the most devastating thing we can do for ourselves, irrespective how old we are. “Solitude , isolation are painful things and beyond human endurance”. Have I understood well Father Seo’s message? Because “The greatest art of life is sensation, to feel that we exist, even in pain”.”Lord Byron’
Stefania Lupu Yes, we better buy them, the older person’s advice. Lord Byron’s words are another insight, another dimension, but so true. When there is no feeling, even if the feeling is pain, we no longer exist.
Thought I wrote my view (with 40 minutes of writing) regarding episode 12, but couldn’t find it now. Had hit enter and edited, read and reread while editing, but still lost??!!! Anyway, to cut short, episode 12 the thing I want to highlight is Father Seo’s wisdom as he lectured his eldest son’s reasoning from not commiting into marriage, is by far the best words I learnt a long long while. Thanks to writer for framing such profound wisdom into words : “”Living is to be with people. Living is to experience emotions with people, that makes us human. “” To think you are old enough and mature and think you are right is a very wrong thinking. I in my 60 over years old could not be sure of what is right what is wrong as I go about my days. I totally agree and deeply feeling what father Seo said. Even when the last nail got knocked into our coffin, we could still not be completely confident about what is right what is wrong. Only what can be done as best as we could in the circumstances. And the message is living is to take the plunge. Simple.
Oh those words of wisdom from Father Seo caught my attention, captured my imagination too. Those words are gems of life!
Dorothy Ooi later my earlier long version appeared so i had repeated myself but not in exact same words. If interested you could read my long version.
About Father Seo so far he is the mentor figure that I would pick out for myself from the cast. He is an absolute gem. Jian is truly his daughter his genes his upbringing.
Chai Hua Loke I have learnt at times you need to exit and re enter before you can see your new comments.
Ok THANKS Dorothy Ooi
