Dog rice anyone?
As some of you would know, if you have followed this website ParkSihooSsi.com for a while, that I have three fur kids. Boy dogs they all are and totally adorable and dear to my heart.
In my younger days, my mum used to cook our family meals. Her regular question to us her children is “What do you want to eat today?” And our standard reply was, “anything”. And her usual response was, “You think anything is easy to cook?”
Now that mum’s old, it is our turn to do the cooking. For me, since I live away from home in another country, I am lucky I don’t have the task on a regular basis. But whenever I am home, I sometimes do the cooking. So like mum in the old days, we have this standard Q&A of “what do you want to eat?”. “Anything!” comes right back from our mum.
But our standard reply is “How about dog rice (food)? The boys (my furkids) invite grandma to share their dog food! Dog rice give (wo)man!
Sounds familiar? This was the conversation Park Sihoo-ssi and his co-traveller Bonggil had about their Channel A reality TV show. “Dog rice give man” was how Bonggil proudly declared in English as the title of the show. In Korean, the actual title is “개밥주는남자”.
Now, while our Oppa’s English is limited, his co-traveller’s English got him stumped! Kekeke! 😂
So, what should the title be in English? Dog rice give man? Man rice give dog? Give dog and man rice? Dog give man rice? Man give dog rice?
Well, if Oppa Park Sihoo-ssi’s English is limited, my Korean is worse! Hahaha! 😂

Dog rice give man狗饭给人? Man rice give dog人饭给狗?Give dog and man rice给狗和人饭?Dog give man rice狗给人饭?Man give dog rice人给狗饭?
好吧,如果偶吧Oppa施厚君的英语有限,哪我的韩语会更烂! 哈哈哈! 😂

Once again nothing about this fabulous Amazing Journey with Pets – of course with reference to the segments on Sihoo-ssi and his travelling companions-two legged adult Bonggil and four legged 10 months old Bonggu – escapes Nance’s attention 😘😘😘
I too have been puzzled and stumped by this often repeated caption “Dog Rice Give Man” – Bonggil’s attempt at translating into English the Korean Title for the show and remain stupified despite the various translations suggested in Nance’s article today – is this the consequence of the nasty haze condition prevailing in my part of the world !?😷🙄
However, what is very clear is that the English language is complex and not easy at all to master by those who attempt to pick up the language only in adulthood. So frankly, I applaud the brave efforts by Sihoo-ssi and Bonggil to converse in English on camera for all public to view and listen and gracious enough to make allowance for viewers to giggle and poke some lighted hearted fun at their Korean accented English.
As to getting to the bottom of what is the most correct English translation for the Korean title of the show, lets hope we soon get the revelation from our Oppa, i.e. if he continues to persevere in improving his oral and written skill in the English language. Add oil ! ( English translation of Mandarin phrase Jia Yiu !) Anyone can help with pronoucing “ Add oil” in Korean? 🤔😆
I hope the haze clears as promptly as possible. It’s horrible for all of you. You have said exactly the thing that was in my mind about all the Canada Amazing Journey episodes by Sihoossi, Bonggil and Bonggu, regarding the English they (actors and producers) introduced. I for one is feeling very very grateful, feeling good and positive of all their efforts. Dorothy Ooi your words expressed precisely what I wanted to express but have yet to crystalize my thoughts into words “brave efforts by Sihoo-ssi and Bonggil to converse in English on camera for all public to view and listen and gracious enough to make allowance for viewers to giggle and poke some lighted hearted fun at their Korean accented English.” Their very own expressions on their faces also tell us they themselves too find those light hearted touches with some English here and there quite amusing to themselves. I sincerely hope they carry these warm light hearted memory into the future and set their heart and mind to tackle English language as much as they want to. Sihoossi’s voice when he speaks English sound to me like coated with honey, there’s this roundness completeness of the English words he said and the fine gentleman’s clarity of the words, I don’t know how to express that tone of his when he speaks English. When he speaks Korean, the intonation of Korean words are a bit curt and short and sounded bolder, but with English, his speech made the words like sweet flowing of honey coated sound, very noice to hear. Sihoossi Fighting! Jia Yiu!
Chai Hua Loke “Sihoossi’s voice when he speaks English sound like coated with honey, the fine gentleman’s clarity of the words”. So beautiful you said, Cha Hua Loke. Although he spoke a few expressions in English, the relaxed tone and “this roundness completeness of the English words” betray a better knowledge of the English language than we imagine. Or that he is a very diligent and talented student.
Daniela Maria Miricescu You’re super Daniela, detected the betrayal of PSH’s English knowledge is more than he is speaking
Chai Hua Loke agree with you; very nice sounding, genteel and refine.
Dorothy Ooi genteel is the word I was searching for, Thanks. I mentioned the word ” finesse” to Nance but didn’t feel that’s good enough description.
Believe finesse is suitable too; as meaning applies to describe appearance and expression. 🤗

I translated separately each word that forms the name of the show into Romanian, then into English and again into Korean. I compared the translations and I found a translation that I like more: “Dog food giver” [개밥=Dog food=mancare pentru caini; 주는 남자= giving man=om care dă]. Google’s automatic translation of the whole title of the show doesn’t seem right to me. 개=dog; 밥=rice, indeed, but taken together it means: 개밥= Dog food. The dogs don’t eat only rice.😊
Daniela Maria Miricescu I suppose in Asian context we often use the word “rice” to generally mean food, for rice is our staple. I like your translation of Dog Food Giver or Provider👍
Daniela Maria Miricescu can’t agree more that Dog Food Giver is more apt than Dog Rice Give Man. I think the title in Korean is conveying the idea that in the context of man and his pet, the man provides for his pet, not just in terms of food, but care, love and protection. Do we not see it so well demonstrated by Sihoo-ssi throughout the various segments… comforting his doggie when bewildered in a strange new environment, getting flat out and tired giving his 4 legged boy the much needed bath, carrying the heavy 10 month old when he became too petrified to cross that swaying bridge….such a wonderful relationship between man and his beloved dog! ❤️
Dorothy Ooi You’re right, Dorothy. The translation of the title could be difficult, but it is easy to identify the idea they promote in the show. Food, love and care for pets.
Dorothy Ooi Absolutely absolutely, even the blind can feel from the show how concerned how detailed how dotting PSH and even Bonggil too have been showering every bit of efforts on Bonggu’s welfare. This show also tells us dogs though they can’t speak in words to tell you they are petrified or that they could cry to protest like a child, but we human have the responsibility to care for them, and we need to tune in to the animal wavelength to sense how they are doing. PSH has done such a marvellous job as a Dog Carer or Minder. The love between man and dog I have yet to find words to describe. Yesterday in my office a new colleague her daughter flew back from Perth just to meet their new family 12 weeks old puppy, yes, main reason is to meet the new family puppy. Me right now still linger on that big wide smiling face puppy when held in my arms. I suppose same as PSH, when his tight work schedule allows, he too goes home to play with family puppies and doggies. Plus he grew up with family dogs, hence he could do so well in the most difficult places and situations of having Bonggu the country boy in crowded noisy city. Bonggu’s trust in PSH is tremendous despite the MANY out of this world adventures PSH kept getting Bonggu involved. I wonder Bonggu ever, say one night back to hotel, said to master, so much adrenaline in one day master, I wonder what’s tomorrow will bring…..woof
Great methodology to get to the bottom of what is the meaning of any language Daniela Maria Miricescu 👍👍👍
Daniela Maria Miricescu this make even better sense!
I’m still here. 😅 Uff! It’s hard to translate for a curious unknowing like me. “개밥 주는 남자” is only half. The full title of the show is: “개밥 주는 남자 개 묘한 여행” which involves the word dog = 개. It’s probably a word game that only Koreans can understand. For example: 개 묘한 (절묘한 = exquisite). I can only adapt: “The dog food giver and his wonderful dog traveling”. 😊
Great perseverance Daniela Maria Miricescu! Yes, absolutely a word game!😄
