Hometown flavors
A couple of years back, Park Sihoo-ssi shared one of his Buyeo hometown’s best kept secret. By now, I guess it is no longer a secret! A refreshingly good traditional small town restaurant serving a simple, hometown fare of cold buckwheat noodles and steamed pork. A good recommendation as this is one of the best Korean cold noodles and steamed pork I have ever eaten in all my travels in Korea!
The restaurant is situated in its own compound, right beside the Baegmagang River 백마강. It is very popular with the weekenders, mainly families or groups of friends. There was already a long queue when we got there, even though it was close to three in the afternoon on a Saturday. Yes, late lunch for the whole jing-gang of us ladies.
We asked for the seat which Park Sihoo-ssi had taken previously, much to the amazement of the restaurant reception, or maybe not as I am sure many have asked the same before! He is after all the most popular person from his hometown Buyeo and so well known even around the world!
We were shown to the back of the rather old and rundown compound, with its rustic, countryside feel. The setting really reminded me of my own childhood kampung style living! My days of running bare-footed, totally wild 😜 and carefree!
Room No 3 was the room supposedly occupied by Park Sihoo-ssi and he is said to have taken corner seat on the right. I am sure he has been there on numerous occasions so there must have been many seats he has sat on! Kekeke! 😄
We ordered exactly what he had eaten previously, which, if I am not mistaken, were the only two dishes served at the restaurant! Cold buckwheat noodles and steamed pork! Of course, they provided those all you can eat, delicious appetisers or banchan as accompaniment. My favourite was the spicy radish!
I love the taste of the cold noodles with its light, refreshing slushy, iced sweet and sour soup flavour, topped with sliced stripes of pear and cucumber, toasted sesame seeds and seaweed.
Not a fan of steamed pork as many a times, it came tough and dry, I was pleasantly surprised at how tender and moist theirs was! Not only that, it was a lean cut of sliced meat where the fat came off easily for me to remove! The dipping sauce was a salty, fermented shrimp sauce that tantalised the tastebuds and enhanced the flavours of the meat. I love it! It is so like the chinchaluo which we, the Southeast Asians, have back home! Yummy!
These are perennial simple hometown flavours not to be missed! Good recommendation, Park Sihoo-ssi!
