Park Sihoo’s best suited role! “The historical drama that challenged me for the first time in nine years. It is the best work in my acting life”
“Everything expressed with one look”. This was the accolade Park Sihoo has earned with his skillful acting. He has played very different characters, showed his ability in recent dramas such as “My Golden Life” (2017) in which he played a charming role of a chaebol third generation and in “Babel” (2019) which embodied the conflict between revenge and love. His well demonstrated ability earned the dramas high audience ratings.
Park Sihoo took the challenge of a historical drama in “Wind, Cloud and Rain 바람과 구름과 비 (King maker: Change of Destiny)” for the first time after nine years since “The Princess’ Man” (2011). The drama will premiere in Japan on KNTV on Saturday, 22 August 2020. The drama presented a storyline that combined historical facts and fiction against a backdrop of the Heungseon Daewongun and his son, King Gojong. Park Sihoo played the role of the best strategist in Korea, Choi Cheonjung.
How was his challenge of the character Choi Cheonjung who read the fate of the nation and devoted everything to the people and the woman he loved? I listened to the insights into the making of an interesting character.
Q: How was it for the first time in nine years since “The Princess Man”?
PSH: It has been a long time since I acted in a historical drama, though the atmosphere is a little similar to that of “The Princess Man”. The flow of the script was similar, but it was an upgrade from “The Princess Man.” The schedule was very tight for a “live” broadcast (Nance’s note: filmed as drama is aired) for “The Princess Man”. This time it was filmed ahead, so I think both the performance and response will be good. “The Princess’s Man” was well loved in Japan, but I think “Wind, Cloud and Rain 바람과 구름과 비 (King maker: Change of Destiny)” will get more interesting as the story progresses, not just at the beginning.
Q: What are the similarities and differences between yourself and the character?
PSH: Similar points are that Cheonjung is quite relaxed, and I think this characteristic is similar. Also, listening carefully to others is similar. What is different …there are a lot. I can’t read the future. But since I played Cheonjung for six months, when I meet people, I get a little feeling like “Oh, this is his personality.”
Q: What lines and scenes left impressions on you?
PSH: The scene where I read the face of the King and knelt in front of him saying, “This is the person who will be the next King!” was especially memorable. Then, the confrontation scene with Heungseon Daewon-gun (played by Jun Kwangryul) was also impressive. The romantic scenes with Bongryun (played by Ko Sung Hee) also left an impression. I think fireflies appearing at the beginning and ending scenes with Bongryun were beautiful.
Q: How was your co-star Ko Sunghee?
PSH: I thought Ko Sunghee was a newcomer because she is young, but she had a lot of experience with many works. She is very considerate of others and created a good chemistry. I think the love scenes were especially harmonious. She is an actress who made the most of the love scenes. Thanks to Sunghee, I always had fun filming. I think it was a perfect match.
Q: You said during the production presentation that you paid attention to how your eyes performed. What did you notice?
PSH: I think you have to have sufficient time to read people’s minds. I made it possible to feel relaxed, even in front of the camera and acted with ease and confidence, just like Cheonjung.
Q: With the Gojong era as background, is there any historical person you like?
PSH: Everyone likes Sejong the Great and Lee Seungshin. Personally, I like history and the actors also work hard in this drama, and the more the story goes on, the more interesting it became. I have worked with many great directors, but the director of “Wind, Cloud and Rain 바람과 구름과 비 (King maker: Change of Destiny)” did everything in detail and illuminated the path for the actors. Charisma was great on the set, thanks to the director. (Laughs)
Q: What did this work leave you?
PSH: Historical dramas are really difficult, so I used to think that I would never do a historical drama again (Laughs). But this time I thought “I want to do another historical drama” even after the filming. I think I am well suited for historical dramas. Although I am an actor, I also enjoyed watching this drama. I think this was the best work of my acting life.
Q: Please share your future goals
PSH: I am happy that “Wind, Cloud and Rain 바람과 구름과 비 (King maker: Change of Destiny)” was loved in Korea. My goal is to create new works that will go beyond “Wind, Cloud and Rain 바람과 구름과 비 (King maker: Change of Destiny)”.
