I found myself crying buckets at the end of Episode 31 of KBS drama “My Golden Life” last night. It was heartbreaking to see Park Sihoo-ssi’s Choi Dokyung who has everything reduced to nothing!
The price third generation chaebol and heir to the Haesung Group Choi Dokyung discovered when he chose independence and love was extremely steep and expensive. A hefty price and a huge sacrifice that cost him everything he had. He has become as poor as a church mouse, no better than a beggar! All the material things he had ever owned, his family, his friends and maybe even his love, lost!
Independence might seem so sexy and attractive, particularly when he has set into action and put into place what he would do when the time came. And every thing seemed to be going his way.
An amicable separation from the woman whom his family had planned a marriage alliance. In fact this elegant lady was sympathetic to his plight as she was in a similar situation with a man she loves in the US of A but she was not brave enough to defy her family wishes. Not only that, she paved the way for her Oppa Choi to hopefully reconcile with his love! Jang Sora, we love you!
Choi Dokyung has also managed to secure a deal with his best friend on a partnership for a face recognition technology business which would give him a solid start once he was ready.
Best of all, he met the woman whom he was giving up everything for and told her where he stood. That he was not engaged to nor will he be marrying Jang Sora. And Oppa Choi was determined that he would make something of himself before he came back to woo his love!
But alas, his plans backfired! His crafty grandfather will not stand defiance and was determined that he paid the price of his independence. Since everything Choi Dokyung has ever owned was due to the Haesung Group or as his grandson, he would leave with nothing of his and that of the Haesung Group. Car, credit and bank cards, his watch, everything except what he was wearing and what little cash he had were confiscated. And he was ordered out of the house, immediately!
Poor Oppa! Out with nothing in the cold! No better than a beggar! What would he do? Find out in tonight’s Episode 32 of “My Golden Life”! KBS 2 at 1955h Korean time!

So poor oppa
Do Kyung must pay a heavy price for his lust for independence. But he is not afraid , because he has a mix of unique strengths to help him be confident to stand alone in his own business, to overcome difficult obstacles, to achieve his meaningful goals. He has come to the best judgement that he must not count on anyone else’s support, but on his own only, and he will be not be dissapointed. He must be strong to face any storm. Do Kyung has finally discovered that there is a stubborness about him that can never bear to be frightened, at the will of others and his courage can rise at the attempt of his grandpa to intimidate him, humiliate him, conspire against him.And although he respects his grandpa, he can’t accept anymore for his grandpa to command him, even if he is older , and with more experience . “Don’t let the noise of others ‘ opinions drown out your own inner voice”[Steve Jobs] And Do Kyung wants to be respected for what he has done by himself. He will succeed even if he must pay a heavy price for his independence.!
When there is a will there is a way.
When I saw Sora went to meet Jian I already felt Sora didn’t go with a malicious or jealous type of disposition, unlike what Nance your earlier article that you thought perhaps Sora was not happy that she lost to a Jian type of girl. I didn’t get that feeling when I watched the scene when Sora ordered a gift. Now your this later article confirmed Sora seperated with CDK in very amicable terms and even helped CDK to reconcile with his love. This is a good story. I recalled some time back I have called for a very good person for Sora’s role , and indeed as it unveils, writer has used this line, where there is really nothing to fault Sora about. Bravo!
I think you were reading “Face off love rivals” which was the preview of Ep 30 which does not show the entire meeting but was presented the way teasers go…most times the outcome weren’t what is presented by the teasers
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후 씨 Correct. Teasers always try to mislead a little
Oh Dear Nance, why should you cry buckets end of episode 31? 🙂 I have just finished the scene where he tendered his resignation end of episode 30 at 00.05 hour of my this morning. To me, that sticky fishbone in my heart about CDK all these while has finally been removed and I feel so good, so jubilated so high spirit when CDK acted so decisively. I envisaged when I come to next episode my response is going to be YES YES YES Go CDK Go! just like how I cheered for the sports that I am rooting for. No tears, I imagined 🙂 CDK is not reduced to nothing, he now is the man, the backbone any man should have in the 1st place. Step out of the shadow of HS Group and family, don’t hide or using these as excuses anymore, no more. Even my husband who walked pass me while watching and I briefly told husband, my husband said “Yes, Man Up.” So yes, no tears for CDK, only joyous congratulations and our very best wishes and support from here on. Bravo Bravo Bravo! And I certainly like the latest phrase coined by Stefania Lupu : lust for independence. That’s the ultimate lust every man should seek.
Because this was the scene I saw being shot on location out in the freezing cold. Because CDK is an innocent in a cruel world and while everyone, including myself are happy to see him go independent and make his stand, being sheltered all his life, he doesn’t know what he will be up against.
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후 씨 Oh…..that explained your tears because you saw the real shooting in the cold. Now I see. 🙂
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후 씨 The cruel world is all to be tackled with mental strength. As long as a person is healthy and with no disability, the world is not hard even for one who has not been exposed, when he sets his mind to accept and deal with it every step of the way, it will not be impossible. 🙂
Chai Hua I like your husband
Chai Hua, I like your husband’s urging :Yes, Man Up!” A strong support for Do Kyung , as Shakespeare praises the real , strong and courageous man:”What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason! How infinte in faculty! In form , in moving, how express and Admirable !In action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god ,the beauty of the world.!”And another quotation from Anthony Burgess that suits to Do Kyung when he decided to live on his own ;” When a man cannot choose, he ceases to be a man.” And Do Kyung could choose to BE A MAN!
Stefania Lupu I was quite surprised that my husband uttered the precise description as he walked pass me watching MGL, I said to husband rich man son decided to ditch his wealth and leave the stiffling family. He said it as if he knew the story line. Sometimes he is at kitchen bench while cooking and waiting for next step, he said why this girl (Jian) always has a drama? As if he follows the many things that happened to Jian.
Good for him. A good fan for Park SIHoo too.
Yesterday I finally properly watched episode 31 where its ending is cunning grandpa made CDK returned every valuable possessions before kicked CDK out of the house. Unlike how Nance cried buckets at this scene, I did not feel like crying at all. I only had the surge of emotion for CDK in the sense that finally finally here comes the big turning point of his life. Filled with excitable emotion for him, not sadness. I thought the grandpa is very clever to use the words regarding his secret withdrawal of money hence he used words “do you want to stoop that low” which no man with backbone will argue with the grandpa on the basis that CDK would have earned his salary by working for HS Group. The way grandpa sees things, CDK is nothing except his (grandpa’s) possession, HS’s possession, that’s why he insulted CDk with the words that do you want to stoop that low to use HS money to establish your new life? To me, this scene says it all, CDK was nothing prior to this, he is never in possession of a single cent to himself, let alone the self esteem and self respect a human being could expect from his own self. Therefore, CDK wasn’t being reduced to nothing when he was stripped baren so to speak when ordered out of Choi’s mansion. He was nothing anyway, he has been a no body anyway, just an existence life that breathes and moves but fully belonged to HS Group. Only from that moment by cutting the dependence on HS Group and Chois, CDK is something, only from that second he can dare to claim a sense of self respect. I am late in sharing my view because even before the festive I was already behind now with the many festivities going on for December, my views would be even later, as I am going to miss both episodes 33 and 34 completely and hopefully come 3rd of January 2018, the marathon repeat on KBS World for episode 32, 33 and 34 will air as usual but then that day I have house guests…..aiyooh yooh….
When you look from the riches point of view CDK’s life has fallen down into a black hole with his wish to be independent and living on his own. Grandpa thought CDK would think twice after demanding all his possessions, but he didn’t. To most people who are used to an affluent life lacking nothing at all, this must be the most scaring thing in the world. It asks for a lot of backbone to go through and face a life without possessions you have never experienced before. CDK proved by staying with his decision, he has a lot more backbone than I thought at the start of the drama. My thought was too: finally, now real life starts for him. No longer a puppet of his family and the HS group. Decisions come with consequences and responsibilities. CDK told Ji Soo. With his leave and plunging into the depth CDK took full responsibility. Now he can explore and develop his own personality independent of anyone!
One point I like to point out is that at the time of leaving the house, CDK thought he can seek his mate’s help, that’s why he went spent the way he spent his money on the 1st night. Not sure if he knew that’s all he can have in his wallet until he earns some income (moreover meagre income, not the type of income from his new face technology business) whether he will leave the house so swiftly. Nevertheless his subsequent realisation of how precious that little bit of money he has, still, such realisation did not change his determination and dignity, he held back from asking for the money he left in the house of his secretary. Yes, he has really man up, good man, CDK!
Chai Hua Loke Not only that, when his sister Jisu tried to give him some some money, he refused and said that would not be appropriate and would be like taking something he should not have. However, the clothes, if he doesn’t wear them, they will be thrown away anyway. Shows his determination and his dignity.
