Crime and punishment. A serious subject to cover when I know everyone’s still high from the stirring of love in the cliff hanger from last Sunday’s KBS drama “My Golden Life”. So unforgettable that expressive face of sudden attraction on Park Sihoo-ssi’s Choi Dokyung’s face.
But unfortunately, the subject of crime and punishment is causing grieve between Seo Jian and Choi Dokyung and it is a huge threat looming ahead. Can’t be avoided.
There was an article by star.fnnews on the subject with legal opinion on issues in the drama. Basing on some of this information, I share my view.
What started off as a lie by a mother who wanted a better life for her flesh and blood daughter might escalate into a big issue! It is not just a lie, but one involving fraud, an intention to deceive and for benefits. Benefit of gaining her own daughter a better and affluent life, and in so doing, depriving the real daughter of her birthright. Benefit also in accepting a popular Haesung owned hamburger restaurant franchise which can earn a substantial future income. Because of this act of fraud, the Chois could suffer reputation damage resulting in loss of societal standing, possibly even financial losses due to the “scandal” on their image on an individual as well as corporate basis. And not forgetting the mental distress they will experience.
This was the crime Mother Seo committed and which she could be imprisoned for up to 10 years and/or fined up to KRW 20 million for a fraudulent act in accordance with Korean law, Article 347 of the Criminal Act.
While Father Seo was not involved in the whole process and in fact was against it. He did not stop his wife, nor did he report this incident. He might be considered an accessory to the crime and be fined up to KRW 500 million and imposed other penalties under the Criminal Act.
Both Father and Mother Seo might also be subject to further civil litigation and be required to pay compensation for causing mental distress.
Seo Jian, even though she was central to this fraud, might not be subject to any litigation or punishment as she was not privy to and had no motive for fraud and in fact raised this with Choi Dokyung.
So even though Mother Seo’s lie might seem “trivial”, it is in fact not. It can have huge repercussions that involve crime and punishment, if the Chois decide to pursue criminal charges and legal actions. Given that “My Golden Life” is a family drama and happy endings are expected, I wonder how Writer So will spin her tale. Interesting…but not without causing heartache between Choi Dokyung and Seo Jian before the end of the series!
Whatever it is, crime doesn’t pay!

Interesting to follow
Yes, I have read that article too. Mother Seo could be punished severely, if the Choi would take action on this and I can’t blame them if they do. I feel sorry for father Seo, but he didn’t do anything to correct the lie of his wife once he knew. I think Ji Soo’s opinion will matter too partly. I am curious how she will respond to the whole situation once it comes to light. The franchise business should be taken away by mother Choi immediately. However, there will be severe heartache for the couple. Apart from this, let’s not forget Do Kyung has already been set up to marry with Sora!
Wilma! You’ve got them ( all the problems ) succinctly sized up. What a mess and how miserable at this point, one third past the start of the drama there is no trace of a golden life in sight! Surely it has to take the mighty pen of creative writer So and smart directing of KIM to cleverly manoeuvre the Seo’s and the Choi’s out of their pits and perils. Coupled with polished performance by a brilliant cast ( no guessing who is my top favourite 😆) we can’t help but have our our eyes glued to our tv 📺 at the appointed time every weekend caught up with the actions, beauty, culture, emotions intrigues, morals, senses, suspense : the wrap up magic of a good drama. Oh Sora Sora will you soon appear?
Since this is a drama and fictitious, we can speculate. I think maybe Sora will not appear at all…she met someone she likes in the US and decided not to come back and not marry CDK or with her US studies, she learnt to be more independent and will not be dictated by society expectations and fall into an arranged marriage set by her family, or…we will see how Writer So spins it. Sora will not be sorry 🙂
We share the same thought Nance. I don’t think either Sora will show up to marry CDK and will stay in the US
It would be nice and too easy to not appear. Because things are getting tangled up, Sora needs to catch the plane for Seoul, to get them even harder ^^.
If anything comes to the surface because of the aunt’s intrigue, for example, Do Kyung’s marriage will be compromised. Of course, if he give a helping hand ^^. But I think Sora will appear and will be, through its qualities, a redoubtable competitor for Ji An, if the moment chosen will be one emotional critic point for Do Kyung.
Your storylines will be more exciting Daniela. I think the marriage will be compromised. Not only his but also his sister’s as both mothers were present when Ji An had to introduce herself as Eun Suk at the gallery
Daniela Maria Miricescu yes that’s my thought too. Sora’s appearance will add to the complication, dilemma drama!
I hope Sora can add some competitor and wake up Seo Jian. And I also hope that Writer So will not put too much focus on the secondary characters. While the pace of MGL is fast, there were some segments which were draggy that could have been cut short to make the storyline more succinct and create more impact. Eg: Seo Jian’s elder brother’s segments, Seon Woohyuk’s interactions with his co-workers and his sister, the baker and his first love,Mother Seo and her flowery friend. Those are complementary plots but seems to be given a bit too much airtime in my view. Except for the first time watching an episode, I tend to skip these plots subsequently
Daniela Maria Miricescu I completely agree with you. Sora must appear. How can she not appear to add more stress and weight of presence to the intrigued plot.
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후 씨 No doubt I too like to see CDK all the time. However even when it is a 16 episodes, no drama can be enjoyed if the drama only talks and shows the lead actors all the time. For a 50 episodes drama, the 2ndary characters also needed to have some depth of their stories and hence air time. Otherwise these non lead actors will not have their share and deep feel about the drama itself. The scene between Seo mother and the flowery dressed friend revealed a fair bit of background and thoughts that sit inside Seo mother which otherwise will not be revealed to us viewers. The support the flowery aunty give to the Seo parents is admirable great spirited friend though she is just a simple housewife. The eldest brother’s love life reveals another angle of how human travelled their life journey and experienced out their own thoughts, decisions and motivations. I especially love the scene where eldest brother brought wife to be home to meet up. That was about the highlight of the Seo family of late after all the unhappy things that loom in their abode. Without the front few scenes of how far the brother and girlfriend had been through, that meeting up with family scene would not come as sweet as it warms me this viewer’s heart and soul. Youngest brother too is given his scenes to demonstrate what is going on with this youngster’s mind ………will continue when I come back from errands….
Chai Hua Loke I am not saying cut them out but being more compact in approach and I also don’t need to have the lead couple story occupying majority of each episode. I understand that these secondary characters are important complements. However, in this case, after 16 episodes, there is a definite skew in my view which could see improvements. And I don’t need to see CDK all the time, but if he is to be the male lead, then I think more airtime must be given to understand him, his family and why they act as the way they do.
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후 씨 Agree, and from now on, it should be skewed to Choi’s family a bit more. Instead of flipping between the 2 families in the 1st 15 episodes, they chose to concentrate bit more on the poor family. P.s I know you were not saying to cut them out. How could I ever institute thoughts of such coming from you, a well balanced headed intellectual lady…kekeke.
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후 씨 oh yeah, Sora will be sorry hahaha, can’t be a case she will not be sorry for not landing CDK. Make her sorry to ache out more of hearts. Make her yearns and craves for CDK, please, writer So, I want to see how CDK hooves his way out of the arranged marriage and how he can be an distinguished gentleman who will handle this big thing that he never objected til now, about his personal life. As some have said, we do not know if Cinderella Jian will ultimately be the long term wife of CDK. The meaning of My Golden Life can be viewed from many angles. Not necessary that the 2 of them must be married and together before one concludes a life is golden after all.
Frightening is this legally outlook, Nance.
However, I dare to bring arguments for Mom Seo (because we are in a TV drama, aren’t we? ^^):
– Mom Seo did not do it premeditated. She did not have time to think about it. She tells to her friend, among tears and desperation, after Mom Noh leaves: “I want to be alone. I’m not myself. I do not even have the energy to talk.” Mom Seo’s suffering at that moment is sincere. She suffered a lot for what she said, but she realized she could not give it back. Let’s remember that Mom Noh Myeonghui appeared unexpectedly and at a sensible moment for mom Seo, who had just talked to dad Seo on the phone about Ji An.
– Mom Seo was attached a lot of Ji Soo, thinking that she was sent by the dear child she had just lost in the accident and, probably due to this terrible loss, loving her even more than she love Ji An. As her friend said at one point: “You just took care of Ji Soo, so he (dad Seo) took care of Ji An.” Mom Seo loves their children equally, be they natural or adopted. The way she slept with Ji Soo (the adopted child) and the way Noh mom slept with Ji An (her own child found) … what a difference!
– Mom Seo firmly asserted that both girls are hers and that mom Noh was wrong, even when to repeat the ADN test was the perspective for both girls. But it seems that Mom Seo succumbed when Mom Noh reasoned why she did this: “Because I’m a mother”. This supreme argument could also be the basis for mitigating circumstances for mom Seo when the time comes for judgment.
However, prolonging with knowingly the state of things that she caused it at a moment of soul sensitivity, for mom Seo these arguments could hardly stand up in front of the law, but from family Choi part will bring a little mercy, especialy if they will be told by Ji Soo.
I am afraid for the health of these parents, on both camps, because the state of tension created is one of border. For the our young heroes, the obstacles will only exist to be past and give the true dimension of their love, to our total satisfaction ^^.
Dear Daniela You have expressed precisely how I understand the poor mother Seo is coming from her own dilemma. No doubt it is absolutely immoral and as Nance presented it’s also illegal, it is a crime to have committed what she has done, however the world is not black and white and mother Seo is coming from how she can best solve all the difficulties faced by her loved ones, daily labourer husband who dared not even tell her about how pitiful state of the family financial well being , the own blood and fresh daughter who has a lot of ambition to reach her full potential in life but totally hindered by circumstances of the family, meanwhile the happy go lucky adopted daughter who seems to be the only freely happy member of the whole family, how do you go about juggling til you think everyone gets the best piece of cake in this difficult world, the piece of cake that the mother thinks each of them so deserved, coming purely as a mother, purely as a loving mother and nothing else. A mother can kill when her children is harmed. The mother does not think about herself when she kills. And she kills with her eyes wide open, conscience fully intact. I have earlier said I do not want mother Seo to get away from the basis that she was of unsound mind, because it wasn’t a case of unsound mind at all. I sounded like I too wanted to see the punishment on mother Seo. I should actually add what I meant is I do not want the script to solve this big question what will happen to mother Seo by the reason of she being found unsound mind in court. Instead I want to see the full spectrum of emotions and reactions from mother Seo as a natural human being. I want to hear her out, what has she got to say and act when it is time that she faces the music. And I want to see how writer So concludes mother Seo’s crime. On the other hand, I also want to hear the words from the Choi parents how they come about leading to taking legal action. Because the Choi parents no doubt are sharp and cold on the outset, however so far, to me, they too are good and fair human beings.
But then, I have something else to say regarding the 2 scenes of the 2 mothers sleeping with their daughters. I do not deem the 2 scenes of intending to show the difference in a mother’s love. To me, both scenes come from purely a fully loving mother’s intrinsic motherly behaviour. Mother Choi too is expressing her strong urge to be close with her long lost daughter. The not as instantaneous warmth on their bed at Chois’ is because both have just found each other, especially the daughter Jian isn’t at ease to be at that proximity that was asked from her just a few days living in Chois. Jisu’s and mother Seo sleeping scene that comes across to us as such loving and mother and daughter warmth scene of course, these 2 have been together for that many years. Other than showing us that mother Seo does not treat either daughter differently when it comes to her heart , in that sleeping scene, I thought the main message of that scene is more of an open mind incident to mother Seo that Jisu is not a happy Jisu as mother Seo thought she would be after Jian is gone, is something to add on the plate of regret for mother Seo when she ponders on what she had done. Mother Seo was seeing and feeling something that she hasn’t thought about, that sending Jian away on the basis the Jisu is as happy as Larry, as her own justification, does not work suddenly because Jisu’s happiness a huge part hinges on Jian being there in the family. Take that factor away, Jisu is jot really the happy Jisu. So one down on her own argument that Jisu is happy at Seo…..nuh…..not so, that’s what that sleeping with Jisu scene trying to tell me.
Mother Seo’s “crime” did not start just now. In fact 25 years ago…she found the child and intentionally did not report the lost child. She wanted to keep her and refused to let her husband report it. She doesn’t care if someone has lost a child and sick with worry. She is concerned only that she has lost hers. The child she found looks like hers and she changed her identity to become Seo Jisu. She had 25 years to do what is the right thing and she didn’t. Her husband is weak because he values too much love – love for his wife, love for his family. On the one hand, I can sympathetise with Mother Seo, but I also find it hard to accept her “values”. So will see how Writer So pens it…and everything boils down to if the Chois will take action or something happens to deter them from taking action
I thought Seo father went about finding out but came home to tell wife that no reported missing child so they concluded poor child was abandoned. Of course what they ought to have done is still they needed to file a police report. However they were about to leave for Dubai filing the report means the child will highly likely end up in orphanage, in their own justification as they themselves believed the child had been intentionally abandoned. Thereafter it is a case of the many parents who raise children not of their own blood: do i tell the child she isn’t mine or do i not tell. Or if i would tell when should i tell?
A child is a human with an identity, not a thing to do as one decides. Even leaving for Dubai does not excuse one from reporting a missing child. And she could easily ask to adopt the child if her parents are not found instead of sending her to an orphanage Mother Seo deliberately made the child look like the child in the passport and so that she could pass her off as the child in the passport. This is equivalent to fraud. Her husband has wanted to stop it but at the urge of his mother-in-law and seeing his wife’ stage, he was swayed. And even in Dubai, and after, she didn’t bother to find the child’s missing parents.
On the point about raising children not of own blood. This was the first thing that struck me when we discussed whether SJA should or should not go to her “birth” family. To me, blood relationship is not as important as people who brought me up with love. There are many cases of adopted children who found out their birth parents are still alive and many because of love of their bringing up parents, decide to continue to stay with them or at least deliberate long and hard before they make any decision on what to do. Their thoughts usually are how their choice would impact on those who love them. So SJA making a quick decision and choosing birth parents over bringing up parents don’t sit well with me, particularly when she knew that the person who loves her most, her father, will be totally devastated.
As far as i know the adoption process can take up to years in reality. The very reason we the childless couple did not gone into the adoption route. Once they are in Dubai it will be even more difficult. Mother Seo at that point was suffering from depression that’s the only reason the husband did not overule her actions. As his mother in law said Seo mother was near breakdown state. Her mind then was not a sound mind. Mistake of this nature will usually take a happening to jolt her to want to rectify and face it with enough bravery in the ensuing 25 years. She is not a woman of great mental strength. Her solutions for life crisis are not made with great foresight. I am not saying her values are to be encouraged but i am only coming from understanding her motivation and her mental ability. And so the saying ” human, born to make mistake ” as the lyrics of a 1980s song
The state Jian was in at the point of leaving was the time she was the weakest of her mind power when everyfront of her living completely defeated her. She was at the verge of even thinking of committing suicide as the waves of unfair outcome of her life. The classmate not only took her job she even took it out of Jian that the classmate had intention to smash her wanted to see if Jian would beg. Seo mother’s threat of Chois are people who won’t just let them be. All these ingredients are the reason writer So deemed enough to make Jian go sooner. And these ingredients sit well with me. If Jian ‘s life was blue sky at that stage then your reasoning of how usually the people you grow up are the ones you would stick on or taking longer to think over make all the sense to me. But that’s not the case on Jian’s plate at that point in time in the penmanship of the script writer. 😊
I understand where you are coming from and under different circumstances I might be more sympathetic. But having seen Mother Seo and her actions so far, I have no sympathy for her whatsoever. Beyond that confrontation when she was taken by surprise, she has meticulously maneuvered her way to reaching her goal – on threat of leaving her family, removing all evidence of the children’s photos, justifying why SJS will be better off where she were, signing off to accept the restaurant franchise without discussing with her husband until her husband found the hidden contract etc.
Not sure mine is a sympathy either. Just trying to put myself in her shoes and in her emotional capabilities. The thing is she knows she is guilty she knows when the truth comes out she is the one going to jail. Since that’s her very made up mind she might as well go all the way is what her role is doing. I don’t even think she (the role) wants or hopes for any symphathy. All she wants is to yield what she wished for. And there are people like her in the real world. Is a matter of whether they can get away or not, that’s about all they care. Therefore to the extend of threatening the hb. If not for that such a powerful blackmail father Seo would have told Jian the truth. So I congratulate writer using this nasty blackmail on her husband otherwise our debate will be why Jian still leave when father told her she is not Eunseok….then the fundamental of MGL is not the same anymore.
Park Sihoo-ssi 박시후 씨 There are moments in life when certain circumstances make you act of an egoistic impulse without realizing that you will hurt someone or even yourself. Only later, when things do not really go the way you want, hits you the reality in front and you see things more clearly. I think So Ji An has a little of his mother’s character, but corrected by the healthy principles that dad Seo imprinted on his children. Mother Seo is selfish, she’s a beloved and spoiled woman (at least in the past; for example, when at her birthday got those valuable jewels, she did whims) and who has the nostalgia and regret of the comfortable life she had sometime.
Daniela Maria Miricescu I have yet to detect similarity of Jian from her Seo Mother up to this point because til now I don’t deem Jian being a selfish person at all. Jian has very strong sense of responsibility. Look at how she handles the mess ever since she found out the horrible lie. She has raced through various scenarios in her imagination but still she has not confronted her Seo parents nor collapsed in defeat in Choi house. Moreover such a brave and bold resolve from a young lady in front of the board of directors in that short moment of notice which was a real panicking state. In my view Jian has the maturity her Seo Mother lacks and Jian has the courage her Seo father lacks. Jian is a good specie of human being who no doubt her 1st motivation is to be responsible to herself so when her luck thins and the roads in front of her were blocked she had to 1st look after herself but i don’t call her selfish because the way she goes about doing what is doable within her means to me is call reasonable. Not noble. But reasonable. Reasonable does not equal selfish. Just my personal view.
Chai Hua Loke I said “there are moments” in which you can become selfish, though you are in fact a good, generous person, and be tempted to show a kind of bravado in front of your destiny. That’s why I said Ji An have just “a little” of his mother’s character.
😊😊😊
